In the opinion of the Ombudsman, the São Paulo government should be held responsible for the deaths. According to the defenders, the people died only because of the violent action of the Military Police to disperse those attending the party.
“We know that no money will bring the victims back. But this recognition has a very important symbolic effect. It would be the State recognizing that, due to the action of its security agents, those people died ”, said the public defender. Fernanda Penteado Balera, assistant coordinator of Center for citizenship and human rights.
Advocates also claim that the State Attorney General’s Office does not need to wait for the police investigation to complete to compensate the families.
If PGE refuses to pay the victims’ relatives, the Public Defender’s Office can sue to collect compensation. For confidentiality reasons, the suggested values are not disclosed.

Audios show PM performance in Paraisópolis
The PMs who participated in the action deny having cornered the regulars of the funk party in the alley. They claim they were trampled to death after two motorcycle criminals, who were chased by officers, infiltrated the party and shot in the direction of the police.
A year later, the suspects sought by officers were never identified or arrested.
The version of the PM, from the beginning of the police chase to the suspects, is present in video recorded by security cameras and also in the virtual report. It has not yet been finalized and will replace face-to-face reconstitution.

Wanted for G1, Lawyer Fernando Capano, who defends 20 of the 31 policemen who participated in the Paraisópolis incident, again denounced that his clients are innocent and acted in accordance with the law.
“We continue to believe that the true person responsible for the tragedy of Paraisópolis could be held responsible, either from a criminal point of view, or for the total failure of municipal attitudes for an event of that magnitude to occur,” said Fernando, suggesting that people answer for the deaths.

The families of the other four dead have the legal advice of Rede Liberdade, a group made up of lawyers who act free of charge in cases of human rights violations.
“This has a pedagogical effect: the State recognizes that its public agents acted outside the legal guidelines and compensates families as a way of signaling to society that it does not tolerate this type of behavior,” he hopes. Felipe Freitas, program advisor for Rede Liberdade.
None of the dead lived in Paraisópolis. As the deceased included minors under 18 years of age, the Ombudsman’s Center for Childhood and Youth also accompanies the relatives and participates with them in meetings with government representatives to discuss compensation.
