Lawyers for former Justice Minister Sergio Moro told the Federal Supreme Court (STF) on Monday (4) that they renounced the secrecy of Moro’s testimony before the Federal Police last Saturday (2) to avoid external context interpretations.

The testimony was collected in the investigation investigating the alleged political interference of President Jair Bolsonaro in the autonomy of the PF, based on public statements by Moro.

In a document sent to the Supreme Court, the former minister’s defense says that “he does not oppose the publicity of the acts practiced in these records,” referring to the testimony and future measures.

According to the lawyers, the intention is to avoid revealing “isolated extracts” with “decoupled interpretations of the entire context of the statements.”

The team defending Moro in the case also says that all of the “relevant facts” of the investigation are in the public interest.

“[…] Considering that the press, in the exercise of its legitimate and democratic role of informing society, has been publishing isolated extracts from the testimony provided by the Applicant on May 2, 2020, this Defense, to avoid dissociated interpretations of the entire context of the declarations and guaranteeing the constitutional right to complete information on the relevant facts – all of which are in the public interest – object of this Survey, does not oppose the publicity of the acts practiced on these records, including the content, “say the attorneys.

Moro testified before the Federal Police in Curitiba on Saturday for more than eight hours. According to TV Globo, in addition to confirming the evidence that he had already presented the alleged interference of Jair Bolsonaro, the former minister released new documents and allowed the extraction of data from his electronic devices.

Until the publication of this report, the Federal Supreme Court has not yet confirmed that it had received Moro’s testimony.

It will be up to Minister Celso de Mello to decide whether the material will be kept confidential or will be disclosed at this stage of the investigations.

This Monday afternoon, the Attorney General, Augusto Aras sent new due diligence requests to the STF.

Celso de Mello must analyze the documents and then decide whether to authorize new measures, such as the collection of testimonies and archival experience on Moro’s cell phone.
