Stella Souza, Hugo Mendes Pereira and the 7-month-old baby of the couple, Sol Mendes, died buried this Tuesday (17) after the collapse of a cliff in Praia de Pipa (RN). The family dog also died.
Hugo, 32, had already starred in an article broadcast on national television in 2017, on the program Domingo Espetacular, at that time presented by journalist Paulo Henrique Amorim.
When the report was issued, Hugo was 29 years old and living in Búzios, Rio de Janeiro, in an adapted car. He traveled the world with a dog named Brisa (video below).
Hugo and Stella liked to be called hippies and they owned the small inn Morada da Brisa (named after the dog), which is on the main avenue of Pipa. They had a close connection to nature, animals, and travel.
Hugo and his dog left Jundiaí in 2015, after his mother died of cancer. There he decided to quit his job as coordinator of international projects, took his surfboard and went to tour the country.
“I had a very well paid steady job and a beautiful job. Leaving seemed crazy, I walked out the front door and left it open. Since then I have traveled to 5 continents, various countries, different cultures, 24 states of Brazil. Hugo and Brisa traveled the country together until she had to stop traveling in November 2018: the dog had a tumor on her spine. Then he got rid of the truck to settle in Pipa. In honor of her, in addition to the name of the inn, Hugo got a tattoo on his leg with Brisa’s face in September of this year.
In Pipa, Hugo met Potiguar psychologist Stella. They soon started dating and moved in together. Last year she got pregnant and had her son.

The Tibau do Sul City Council was aware of the risks of collapse of the cliffs of Praia de Pipa. The dangers of the section had already been warned in recommendations made by the Federal Public Ministry of RN (MPF-RN). “The Municipality hired a geologist, he has already done this mapping and is in the final phase of this report. As of the conclusion, there will be a new hearing of the MPF for referrals and how to address more forcefully what is happening ”, explained the state coordinator of Civil Defense, Marcos de Carvalho.
After the accident this afternoon, Civil Defense teams from RN and Tibau do Sul were in Pipa to decide on a possible interdiction of the section. The establishments on the top of the cliff were inspected and, due to the high tide, only on Wednesday morning (18) will an assessment of the area where the accident occurred.
“I was born and raised here and this has always happened, but more and more the sea is destroying the cliff. We see tourists enjoying the shade of the cliffs and we ask them to leave because we know the risk, ”said a fisherman from the region.
Iiba Cortez, secretary of Urban Environment of Tibau do Sul, explained that the municipality has been working on finalizing the technical report and believes that the collapse was intensified by the strong action of the tide.
“We had been doing a study of the cliffs. This adds up to a tidal action factor. The tides of the last two months are very violent, ”he said.
“We were taking palliative and preventive measures. In July we carried out an inspection with the State Civil Defense and we traveled this point to Baía dos Golfinhos in relation to this signaling. We put up some signs with risk of falls. Today we had a beach inspector. We put beach inspectors to warn bathers of this, ”he said.
According to the secretary of Urban Services of Tibau do Sul, Francisco Albuquerque Neto, the City Council had also placed a sign on the section where the accident occurred, but it was destroyed by the action of the sea.
