The Minister for Women, Family and Human Rights, Damares Alves, commented in an interview with the program Conversa com Bial, of TV Globo, about the case of the 10-year-old girl who underwent an abortion procedure after being raped and becoming pregnant by her uncle in Espírito Santo.
For the minister, the child did not need to undergo an abortion and the “correct” thing would be to wait two weeks and anticipate the delivery.
“The doctors in Espírito Santo did not want to have an abortion, they were willing to anticipate the delivery. Two more weeks, they were not going to pass until 9 months, Bial, the girl who is going to be nine months pregnant, talks to the doctors. Two more weeks this girl could have had a cesarean section, take the girl out, put her in an incubator, if she survived, she survived. If not, he had a dignified death, “said the minister.
The girl was subjected to a pregnancy termination procedure at a hospital in Recife, capital of Pernambuco, after a decision by Judge Antonio Moreira Fernandes, of the Juvenile and Youth Court of the municipality where she lives, to authorize the abortion. Legislation authorizes the termination of pregnancy in the event of rape.
