Scenes from the sand of Ipanema crowded with young people, at a party that began on Wednesday afternoon (30) and spent the night, made the beach of Rio the new symbol of abandonment with the second wave of Covid-19 in Brazil which is around 200 thousand deaths from the virus.

The videos broadcast by social networks were captured on Farme de Amoedo street, an LGBTI point in Rio de Janeiro. “Look at the beach. It’s just crowded at a time like this. There is no party anymore, but they don’t go to bed,” says a boy in a recording that shows hundreds of men, most in trunks, at sunset. There is no one with a mask.

In another video, with the sun still high, one or the other appears with some kind of covering on their heads: straw hats and hats. Again, mask zero.

This was just one of the illegal parties that took over the outskirts of the city, blocked for New Year’s Eve as a way to mitigate crowds. On the social networks, the celebrations won the ironic title of CovidFest.

“We are a walking tragedy,” wrote one Internet user commenting on the viral images of people dancing and drinking in Ipanema.

“I swear that when I saw the videos that are circulating, I saw a cemetery with several graves piled up,” said another boy.

The Military Police say that it is “making efforts to act at this complex moment and make the population aware of the norms provided in the pandemic decrees.” He does not know how many events of this type were killed by the police.

The prime minister performed in Ipanema, but even after interrupting the party, many men remained in the sand and on the boardwalk.

The City of Rio says that it has intensified the inspection for the morning of this Thursday (31) and the night of the shift.

The council reached 14,743 deaths from Covid-19 on Wednesday. According to the Municipal Secretariat of Health, the occupancy rate in the SUS ICU for patients with the virus (which includes beds in municipal, state and federal units) is 92%.
