Health officials in the US state of California concluded that the first Covid-19 deaths in the United States occurred earlier than previously thought.
Until now, the first death in the United States was believed to have been in Seattle, on February 26. But tests showed two deaths before that in Santa Clara, California. The first of them 20 days before his death in Seattle, on February 6. The evidence is that the deaths are not linked to traveling abroad. At the time, the United States only tested who had traveled.
The confirmation creates doubts about how and when the virus arrived in the country. Counting the amount of time the patient was hospitalized and the virus incubated, Covid-19 may have begun spreading throughout California in early January, long before anyone had imagined and any action to contain the pandemic.
Looking at the map of the country, the most affected states on the west coast are the states of California and Washington. Together, they represent nearly 50,000 cases and 2,000 deaths. The center-west of the country, less populated and denser, has less impact. In this region, the biggest problem is Colorado, with more than 10,000 cases, and the worst part of the pandemic spread from the east coast to the center of the country. Seven of the eight states with the most cases are in this area.
On Wednesday (22), the two states with the most cases, New York and New Jersey, and neighboring Connecticut, which has had more than 1,400 deaths from Covid-19, announced a joint plan to track people who have already have had contact with someone exposed to the new coronavirus. For governors, these tests are essential to prevent further waves of contamination.
Looking at the country as a whole, the graph shows that the number of new daily cases has been declining. Many hospitals celebrate thousands of cured patients. In New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz, the 1,500th patient was released from a hospital with music and, without neglecting protection, the trombone was as the costume says: with a mask.
