A day after exceeding 200 thousand deaths caused by covid-19, Brazil reached other sad marks on Friday (8). The country has exceeded 8 million confirmed cases of the disease since the start of the pandemic. In addition, it broke the record for positive diagnoses in 24 hours. The data comes from the press media consortium from which Twitter It is part of.

From yesterday to today, 84,977 cases of covid-19 were registered throughout the country. Until then, the day-to-day record had occurred on December 29 (79,295). It should be noted, however, that the state of Paraná had not sent updated data before the close of the bulletin this Thursday (7), at 8 pm. In other words: these missing numbers were inserted into this Friday’s calculation. In total, 8,015,920 have been infected since the start of the pandemic.

For the fourth consecutive day, Brazil registered more than a thousand new deaths from covid-19 from one day to the next. In the last 24 hours, 1,379 new deaths were registered (the highest mark since August 4, with 1,394), with a total of 201,542 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

The country repeats a sequence that it had not seen since August 18, 19, 20 and 21 (with 1,365, 1,170, 1,234 and 1,031 deaths, respectively), the last time in which there were more than a thousand new deaths in an interval of 24 hours on consecutive days. On January 5, 6, and 7, there were 1,186, 1,266, and 1,120, respectively.

Brazil is the third country with the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the world, according to Johns Hopkins University. The country is only behind the United States and India (with 21,668,882 and 10,413,417, respectively, in data released this afternoon).

There were an average of 872 deaths in the last seven days.

Data from the Ministry of Health

In a bulletin released this afternoon, the Ministry of Health confirmed the record of 52,035 positive tests for the new coronavirus in the last 24 hours throughout the country. On Thursday (7), according to information from the Ministry, Brazil broke the record for new cases overnight, with 87,843. The total number of infected people reached 8,013,708 since the beginning of the pandemic.

From yesterday to today, there were 962 new deaths caused by covid-19, according to the folder. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 201,460 people have died from the disease. The federal government also reported that 7,114,474 people recovered from the disease, and another 697,774 were followed up.

Anvisa receives request for emergency use from CoronaVac and AstraZeneca

Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) received today (8) requests from Fiocruz (Oswaldo Cruz Foundation) and the Butantan Institute to authorize the emergency use of the AstraZeneca and CoronaVac vaccines, respectively.

The emergency use allows vaccination in risk groups such as the elderly, indigenous people and health professionals. For both cases, Anvisa estimates that the analysis should take up to 10 days. Fiocruz reported that the final registration request (which allows mass vaccination) must be made until January 15.

Yesterday, representatives of Fiocruz, Anvisa and the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca met to discuss documentation and information on the vaccine production process of the Serum Institute, in India.

Vehicles gather for information

In response to the decision of the government of Jair Bolsonaro to restrict access to data on the covid-19 pandemic, media Twitter, El Estado de S. Paulo, Folha de S.Paulo, O Globo, G1 and Extra formed a consortium to work collaboratively to seek the necessary information directly from the state health departments of the 27 units of the Federation.

The federal government, through the Ministry of Health, should be the natural source of these figures, but the attitudes of the authorities and the president himself during the pandemic cast doubt on the availability of the data and its veracity.
