From Fernando Henrique Cardoso’s column in Globo:

I hardly wrote the title of this article (using the little Latin that I still remember), and I already regretted it. Will it really be like this or will the year ahead be even worse? Difficult to imagine, but not impossible. It is true that the pandemic, the new coronavirus, kills without mercy and … Not only the elderly, it also harasses the youngest; which makes the situation worse. It is also true that we had a government with little imagination and that looks at the country through a short spectrum. But if we look at the world, at least there has not been a global war, and the recession, although strong, is not comparable to other crises that have paralyzed international business. Anyway, without “panglossism”, well done, the year was bad, but it could (as almost always) be worse …

I’m not saying that to console myself or, who knows, to feed the eventual reader. I say why it is necessary to look forward with some hope. I also know that it is easier to imagine that “it was not this government”, the pandemic could not have killed or mistreated so many people. Is it true? Probably. But, the virus is very strong and it is decimating the people, regardless of the quality of the governments. It seems like a simple way to “blame” only the government (in this case the federal) for the ills that afflict us. Of course, it is not sensible – to say the least – to change so many health ministers and finally appoint someone who, by profession, does not know the subject. As serious as this is to regard opponents as “enemies”, playing the country in imaginary divisions. And it is always possible to expand the list of what governments lack to make everything work out …

However, this is not the time to settle scores. Experience shows that it is better to wait until time is up than to hasten the end of governments. A little more, if people do not insist on the old preferences and if we are lucky enough to have someone who opens a more promising path, there will be new choices. Will we change something?
