The target of sexist jokes on the Porta dos Fundos channel, the most voted councilor in Curitiba, Indiara Barbosa, of the New Party, believes in the political and ideological motivations behind the publication of the video that falsely hints at her success at the polls for sexual favors.

“I think so, because the criticism was very strong in relation to the party and the ideas it represents. They criticized Curitiba society and my party. In a way, there is an ideological bias, “he told People’s Gazette.

The councilor says she sees the parody as freedom of expression and that she does not intend to take legal action against the channel, but that she expects a retraction from Porta dos Fundos.

Searched for by email, the producer replied that “the group Porta dos Fundos communicates that the character Yollanda, who appears in the sketch” Yollanda Vereadora “published on the group’s YouTube channel last Sunday (22) is not really the new one. Councilor-elect Indiara Barbosa. Yollanda is a creation of fiction and humor. She has been in existence for 9 years and, within her universe, she freely explores her sexuality. Porta dos Fundo believes that Brazil needs more women in public office. “

The producer, however, did not explain the video’s allusions to Curitiba, the New Party and the result of the municipal elections in the city.

Read the interview with the following councilor:

The video that is being widely disseminated on social networks does not mention her directly, although it does speak of “the most voted councilor in Curitiba,” from the Novo party. Why would people associate the character with his name?

I saw the video for the first time when someone tagged me on Instagram. At first I was trying to understand what it was, and soon I saw that it had nothing to do with me, despite the fact that they quoted the “most voted councilman in the city.” I thought it was strange, but I understood that it was a satire and they were making fun of the Curitibanos and the party. I thought, “it’s just a joke.”

But people began to ask, in the comments, if it was true that he had leaked nudes. Some said that “something similar had happened in their city as well.” They are people who do not know me, they do not know anything about my story and they began to think if this whole story was true, just that.

I really believe in freedom of expression and saw it as a humorous video. There is no escape. But I started to worry about having to explain myself.

Did you suffer from some kind of similar episode during your campaign? Have you followed situations of this nature within the party or observed other women?

I think this is a necessary discussion, because many women suffer harassment, sexism, prejudice. But in the game, I have never been in a situation like this. In fact, many women were elected by Novo: 34% of women throughout Brazil and in capitals, 73%. This reveals that we are managing to change the situation and the participation of women is essential. This will improve the opportunities for equality and treatment, we can prove it in practice. That is why we suffer attacks.

I was not chosen for any of these reasons. [citados no vídeo]. I am an accounting auditor, I worked for 13 years in a multinational company and I left my career to enter politics. There is no use complaining about the policies and not getting involved, doing nothing.

I already knew that getting into politics would not be easy, as it is a hostile environment. But this type of situation makes us even stronger, more motivated to change, not to overwhelm ourselves and to improve politics.

Women in politics are harassed almost every day on social media. This is kind of a standard. From the moment you start to have several followers, you start to have this type of milder harassment on the networks. In the party, however, this never happened, under any circumstances. We don’t go through that kind of situation. We chose two women precisely because the treatment within the party is the same for everyone.

What is your position in relation to the Porta dos Fundo video? And if your name was not involved in this, what would your position be?

I believe in freedom of expression, people have to be free. But there is this issue of veiled machismo. We have this culture of associating a woman’s success with any reason other than her competence. We still see it.

The channel [Porta dos Fundos] she says, in some situations, defending women, and one of the main characters, Fábio Porchat, has a post on his page encouraging people to vote for female candidates. But they do not pay attention to the fact that they are reproducing harmful behaviors for women.

It is a channel followed by millions of people who do not know me. This worries me, so I took a position and many others spoke in my defense.

Is there, in your perspective, a political and ideological motivation behind the video?

I think so, because the criticism was very strong in relation to the party and the ideas it represents. They criticized Curitiba society and my party. In a way, there is an ideological bias.

They didn’t know me, but being the most voted candidate upsets the traditional political structures, in a way. All of this may be related.

Do you see this as freedom of expression? Are you going to take any legal action?

We are evaluating. Although I was a character, they were citing many characteristics that brought me closer to the situation. Clarifying things better can solve this problem of trying to denigrate my image, damage my reputation.

That is freedom of expression. Many people came to my defense, there would be no reason to censor the channel. They have to be open to listen and understand the seriousness of what they did and then back down.
