The payment of emergency aid and the fall in income of the middle class, the richest segment of the population, increased the number of people in class C at the highest level in history, according to a study by FGV, informs O Globo.
According to economist Marcelo Neri, class C today has 133.5 million people, or 63% of the country’s population. The highest level before that was 55.1% of the population in 2014.
However, if emergency aid runs out, 15 million people return to poverty, according to the economist.
“Emergency aid has increased considerably, with a large dose of transfer. In nine months, it represents nine years of Bolsa Família. With that, 15 million people have been lifted out of poverty, ”said Neri.
The economist also pointed out that 4.8 million middle class people lost income and fell to class C. “This lower middle class, identified as class C, was fueled by good news from the poor and bad news from those above.” , summarized Marcelo Neri.
