The president of the Union of Funeral Companies of the State of Amazonas, Manuel Viana, confirms that the number of daily deaths has grown above expectations and, therefore, the organization of burials has escaped control.

– Before coronavirus, the average here was 30 burials per day. The funeral sector I made a projection that we would be in April with about 50 deaths a day. But only this Sunday 122 died. On Tuesday of last week (14) there were 102. Since then, this number has only grown.

To find solutions, Manaus created a death crisis committee made up of members of the funeral sector and the municipal secretariats of Women, Social Assistance and Citizenship (Semasc) and Cleaning and Public Services (Semulsp), which began the discussions on Monday. The first measure to try to contain the chaos in the Tarumã cemetery is to increase the number of employees.

Refrigerators

On Monday, Semulsp reported that it installed refrigerated containers in the cemetery to hold coffins waiting for the burial. Videos circulating on social media show rows of funeral cars waiting to bury bodies.

The measure aims to accelerate the SOS funeral service, which today is the only one available free of charge to the most vulnerable population, to carry out the burial of people who cannot pay the burial costs.

“The cameras are being used to store coffins, while family members await the moment of burial, without the need for the SOS Funeral vehicle to await their release, and now they can return to base for a new call,” he says. a note from Semulsp.

The Amazonas government also installed refrigerated containers in hospital units in Manaus, after the repercussion of a video that showed the bodies with alleged Covid-19 left next to hospitalized patients, at the João Lúcio Hospital, East Zone.
