RIO – This Saturday morning, professionals in the field of medicine held a demonstration at the door of the Bonsucesso General Hospital, where the Minister of Health Nelson Teich, who, following an agenda in Rio de Janeiro two days ago, visited the hospital unit. Protesters held banners and posters denouncing the lack of support to fight the coronavirus and in favor of SUS.
Last Sunday, O GLOBO showed that of 240 beds in the federal unit, as indicated in the decision of the Federal Court for the removal of the director for not treating the pandemic, only 18 patients were hospitalized with Covid-19 and another 17 in the emergency room. .
Nelson Teich is expected to announce the delivery of two million personal protective equipment (PPE), in addition to the schedule for the weekly delivery of respirators, with a number between 50 and 100 immediately. On Friday, he had an extensive agenda in Rio, but avoided talking to the press and detailing concrete federal aid measures.

– We are here, health workers and users of the SUS, making a demonstration without crowds, following the recommended criteria to combat the pandemic, to denounce a project to dismantle public health, the systematic and historical attacks on the Unified Health System and that In This pandemic moment takes on the cruelest character, with countless patients and preventable deaths at a time when the federal government is taking no effective action with reasonable results to provide assistance to victims of the pandemic. A few days ago, 15,000 respirators were canceled in the purchase process, adding to the federal government’s orchestrated non-attendance project. This is not the madness or the incapacity of a president. It is a genocidal necropolitics that victimizes the most vulnerable populations. Therefore, we are here to say that we will continue to fight for people’s health and lives. Outside Bolsonaro and his generals, some of those present said, in a game.
A week ago, GLOBO showed that 1,840 beds in the capital of Rio were classified as deteriorated, that is, they could not function due to the lack of equipment or professionals, despite the existence of the room. Most of these vacancies were in the federal network, in units such as the Hospital General de Bonsucesso (HGB) and INTO. Hospital Bonsucesso, for example, stopped offering 28 specialized medium and high complexity services to exclusively attend Covid-19 cases, by order of the Ministry of Health, but it has received few patients in practice.
– All this flow to fight the coronavirus was very confusing. The Bonsucesso Hospital was one of those intended for care, but unsatisfactorily. There was no conversation with the community, many clinics were closed, including an oncology service. However, they forgot about the professionals, the structuring of the service and the assistance. We have to have job security features, for example. We see a large number of professionals contaminated and this is due to the scarce organization of training to face a pandemic of this size. I mean, there was all this confusion. The hospital does not even serve patients with Covid-19, nor the other demands, reported a 56-year-old federal network laboratory technician present at the protest this Saturday.
Agenda of the minister in Rio
According to lawmakers who were with the minister on his commitments in Rio, the focus of the trip has been on how the federal government could help field hospitals. This Friday, the first day on the agenda, Teich held meetings with Mayor Marcelo Crivella and Governor Wilson Witzel during visits to the Riocentro and Maracanã facilities, which opened this Saturday with 40 beds out of a total of 400 promised.
