The unit will have 60 beds built in an area of the Hospital Independência, in Porto Alegre, where the largest number of Covid-19 cases is concentrated in the State
Gerdau, Ipiranga and Grupo Zaffari will invest R $ 10.4 million in the construction of a hospital in Porto Alegre, in Rio Grande do Sul. The unit will have 60 beds built in an area of Hospital Independência, in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul , where the largest number of Covid-19 cases in the state. The goal is to deliver the work in record time, in late May.
“Among the pillars we choose to help combat the pandemic, the expansion of hospital capacity is an important variable,” says Ipiranga president Marcelo Araújo. According to him, during the crisis, the unit will be used as a base for the treatment of the coronavirus. During this period, the institution will be managed by the Moinhos de Vento private hospital, another project partner.
Once the pandemic period has ended, the unit will be transferred to the Porto Alegre City Council and will be incorporated into the Hospital Independência, making a legacy in the city, says Araújo. Construction will begin later this month and should be completed by the end of May. The speed of the works will only be possible thanks to the modular construction technique, created by the construction company Brasil ao Cubo.
With a speed four times greater than a common construction, this technique consists of installing individual modules, produced in the factory and then assembled in the chosen location. The model has already been used by Gerdau in another initiative in São Paulo. In partnership with Ambev, the company built a unit at M’Boi Mirim, also for the treatment of Covid-19.
In the Porto Alegre project, 300 professionals, including doctors and a multidisciplinary team, will be transferred to the new unit, which will offer 24-hour service. According to Gerdau President Gustavo Werneck, the moment is challenging and requires agility and collaboration. “Innovation, combined with speed of construction, is essential to build the treatment center, which will save many lives,” he says.
In addition to the cash donation, Gerdau will supply 400 tons of steel and assist in the construction process.
