RIO – The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Crivella, detailed in a press conference held this Saturday afternoon the decree on the mandatory use of masks in the city that will be published this Saturday in an additional edition of the municipality’s Official Gazette. Starting on Sunday, the equipment must be used in all public spaces in the capital, such as streets, squares and buildings; displacements in public and private public transport; and in authorized commercial establishments, such as markets and pharmacies.

– The masks can be homemade, made of cotton. They do not have to be professionals, they must be left in the hands of health professionals, said the mayor.

According to Crivella, establishments like supermarkets and public transport should block the entrance of those without a mask. The decree gives a period of 5 days from this Sunday for Rio de Janeiro and companies to adapt to the measures.

In case the rules are not respected, fines can be imposed, which will still be defined in a joint resolution of the Municipal Secretary of Health, SEOP and the Municipal Secretary of Social Assistance and Human Rights:

– In the regulation of the law there will be punishment, but we are thinking of sensitizing people. When people see street sweepers in a mask, the city guards in a mask will think, “Whoa, am I the only one without a mask? – He stated – One must alert the other that he does not wear a mask to use, protect himself and others

Regarding the capacity of the hospital network, the mayor stated that the bed occupancy rate in the ICU in the municipality fell from 90% to 87%. Yesterday 17 beds were opened: three in the Ronaldo Gazola Municipal Hospital, two in Souza Aguiar, ten in Albert Schweitzer and two in Pedro II. This Saturday 7 more beds will be opened in Gazola.

“Our goal is to open 10 beds every three days,” said Crivella.

There is also a public notice for the recruitment of 1,000 beds on the private network to be launched by the City Council, but no prediction has been given as to when these acquisitions will take place.

The mayor also stated that the lack of clinical beds for patients with Covid-19 is not a risk for the municipal network. The problem for hospitals in Rio would be the lack of ventilators for critically ill patients. Crivella said she expects a response from the Health Ministry next Monday regarding the release of 80 respirators purchased by the city last year that were assigned to the federal network.

Also according to the mayor, to prepare the municipality’s health network for the increase in the growth curve of new coronavirus cases, another 300 respirators will arrive from China until April 29, and another 400 should arrive on May 27.

– We need to make the population aware that it is a matter of time. We are building Noah’s Ark. We need the ark to be ready when the flood comes.

The mayor also estimated that until Tuesday the field hospital in Riocentro should already be working. With 17 thousand square meters, Pavilion 3 will be the space reserved for the treatment of patients with the new virus. With 500 beds, the site will have 100 spaces reserved for ICU only and another 400 for medical clinics.

New equipment was also presented, which will remain in the field hospital and will serve to disinfect local employees. The structure consists of a booth that sprays a substance called “Atomic 70” on anyone who passes through it. It works as a kind of “car wash” that removes the virus that is in contact with people’s clothes and skin.

On Friday, Crivella reinforced the population’s request to avoid crowds and not leave their home. But if he needs to leave, the mayor made it clear that masks will be required. For workers in essential services, such as markets, establishments will be required to provide protection for employees.

“I ask for the love of God: don’t expose yourself. Don’t pile up. We are reaching a very critical moment and every sacrifice we have made so far cannot be thrown away ”

– All people who go out into the street will be forced to wear the mask. It’s fundamental. And to give an example, all servers, from secretaries to street sweepers, should use. In addition, in the coming days we will distribute more than one million and eight hundred thousand masks on the streets. They are not surgical masks, they are simple, but they can be used. In addition, employers will have to give masks to their employees, he determined.
