The Ministry of Health announced today that Brazil reached 10,627 deaths due to the new coronavirus, with 730 deaths confirmed in the last 24 hours. With one death every two minutes, it was the second highest number of confirmed victims in a day since the pandemic began: the record was recorded yesterday, with 751 new deaths.
The country also broke the record for covid-19 case confirmations in 24 hours, with 10,611 new diagnoses between yesterday and today. In total, the Ministry of Health registered 155,939 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the country.
The case fatality rate is 6.8%. Of the total deaths, 234 occurred in the last three days and 1,880 are under investigation. The government also reported that 83,627 patients are being followed (53.6% of all cases) and 61,685 have recovered from the disease (39.6%).
With the increase in the number of deaths, Brazil becomes the sixth country with the highest number of deaths from covid-19 in the world, behind the United States (78,320), the United Kingdom (31,662), Italy (30,395), France (26,313) and Spain (26,299). The figures were compiled by Johns Hopkins University, a world reference in coronavirus research.
Division by states
The state of São Paulo has the most reports, with 44,411 cases and 3,608 deaths, followed by Rio de Janeiro (16,929 diagnoses and 1,653 deaths) and Ceará (15,879 cases and 1,062 deaths).
Mato Grosso do Sul is the state with the lowest number of notifications (346 cases and 11 deaths). Tocantins has the lowest number of deaths from the disease (572 diagnoses and 9 deaths).
Three-day official mourning
Previously, the National Congress declared an official three-day mourning for the more than 10,000 people killed by the disease in the country. In a note, the Presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, Davi Alcolumbre (DEM-AP) and Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ) expressed solidarity with the families of the victims and declared that Parliament “is not indifferent” to the situation .

“Each victim had a name and life plans that were interrupted, as well as family and friends who now suffer this great loss,” says the minister.
In the name of the Judiciary, Toffoli calls for unity between powers and coordinated action “supported by science”.
Bolsonaro: ‘fake barbecue’ and jet ski

How the Ministry of Health takes stock
The Ministry of Health has added to the daily balance of deaths from the disease the deaths that occurred from the first cases, but which only had confirmation of covid-19 on the last day.
Due to this retroactive update, deaths that occurred, for example, a month ago, are counted in the daily calculation, greatly altering the perception of the pandemic’s progress.
