Nine people died after a lung ventilator exploded at a hospital treating coronavirus patients in southern Turkey, authorities said.
The blast caused a fire in the intensive care unit of the private Sanko University Hospital in the city of Gaziantep, the local governor’s office reported.
At least one of the patients died during transfer to another hospital.
Turkey recorded nearly 2 million coronavirus cases and 17,610 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University in the United States.
There were no injuries as a result of the fire, which occurred Saturday morning and was quickly extinguished.
The victims were between 56 and 85 years old, the hospital said in a statement.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the explosion.
Several other patients who were being treated in the same ward were transferred for treatment at nearby hospitals, the Gaziantep governor’s office said.
“The authorities have taken the necessary measures,” the statement said, offering condolences to the families of the victims.
Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin tweeted to wish “urgent healing for the wounded,” adding: “Get well soon, Gaziantep.”
Last month, a fire at a hospital in Romania killed 10 patients receiving treatment for COVID-19.
Reports suggest that a medical device caught fire, causing a nearby oxygen cylinder to explode.
In October, more than 150 patients at a makeshift coronavirus hospital in Russia’s Chelyabinsk region had to be evacuated when an explosion in an “oxygen cabin” sparked a fire, the Russian emergency ministry said.
