On Wednesday night, Corinthians played their most intense match in this Brazilian Championship. With tactical adjustments, rehearsed plays and an unusual bet on the base players precisely in the sector in which Corinthians strengthened the most in the season, Timão de Dyego Coelho can say that it was more intense than any other version of 2020.
Coelho, in fact, proved once again that pragmatism is not used. After replacing Éderson with 17 minutes at Maracana for identifying a problem in his starting line-up, he launched two youngsters into professional football in a match that was essential for the recovery of the team’s confidence.
The first half showed a Corinthians willing to put pressure on the rival and exchange very few side passes. Xavier, chosen to stay at the head of the area, accelerated all the balls he had at his feet. Possession waned, but Corinthians was clearly more objective in the game.
Roni, the other rookie, was free to attack and formed a block on the right side with Fagner and Otero. The idea of a quick decision in the attack yielded lateral fouls and corners, when Coelho’s other surprise for the game came into play: the rehearsed plays. Fagner fired low on the edge of the area and Otero had a deflection in his shot to open the scoring.
After great pressure from Bahia, who took advantage of the fact that Xavier entered the area a lot and left a large space in the entrance, facilitating the numerical superiority, Timão had two good escapes on the right to be incisive. In the first, Araos wasted a good pass from Otero. In the second, Otero backed down for Piton, who found Roni for a beautiful goal.
Bahia kept up the pressure and soon came down, on a great shot from Nino Paraíba, approaching the tie until halftime at the base of the short game around the Corinthians area. Cassio, a giant, avoided that.
At half-time, Coelho corrected the problem in a peculiar way: he drew Araos, sent Ramiro to the field and, with the duplication of the expert alongside Fagner, Bahia could no longer have the volume of the game.
Timão came out from behind and was in danger of dead balls again. From Otero’s fouls to Fagner’s corners, he saw Gil make it 3-1 and lose space under the bar. The quiet, however, would not go hand in hand with a Corinthians game on the field.
Even with more difficulties, Bahia reduced the ball and turned the final minutes into pure emotion. Coelho abandoned the tactical plan and placed Méndez on the wave of Otero to populate the defense, holding the 3-2 and letting out a cry worthy of relief.
