Luis Roberto Barroso, Minister of the STF and President of the TSE
“Paulo Bonavides had an insurmountable value on the Brazilian scene, from the institutional, theoretical and affective point of view. Institutional because, together with José Afonso da Silva, he kept the flame of constitutionalism alive during the long night of the military dictatorship. Theoretical because He was a pioneer in the rapprochement between Law and Ethics, leading the post-positivist movement in Brazil. And emotional because he was a kind, generous person with a great sense of humor. An enlightened being. From now on, he will shine in the sky. “
Alexandre de Moraes, Minister of the Supreme Court
“I had the great honor of living with Professor Paulo Bonavides for many years. One of the greatest scholars of Constitutional Law and Political Science in Brazilian history. Intelligent, humble and extremely dedicated to his students. A great heart and example for all us. Rest in peace next to God and may your family be very strong right now. “
Maria Cristina Peduzzi, president do TST
“The work of Paulo Bonavides has a permanent impact on the training of countless generations of Brazilian lawyers. Like few others, he was able to condense the spirit of national constitutionalism, systematically systematizing the theoretical influences of Brazilian law. Brazil loses a democrat who accurately described the bases of support for national constitutionalism “.
Humberto Martins, president of the STJ
“Paulo Bonavides, one of the greatest constitutionalists of our time! Brazil loses a notable jurist and ethical example of a citizen! We had several meetings in Alagoas, at which time he chaired the OAB!”
Jorge Mussi, vice president of STJ
“We have lost our greatest constitutionalist. A luminous figure in the Humanities. A person whose character was restored by the flame of his idealism was an example to good men.”
José Levi, Attorney General of the Union
“Brazilian Constitutional Law loses one of its greatest exponents. The works and teachings are numerous. May it be in Eternal Peace and may your family have the consolation of the best memories.”
João Otávio de Noronha, Minister of the STJ
“Brazil and the world lose with the death of Bonavides, a genius of modern constitutionalism.”
Marcelo Navarro Ribeiro Dantas, Minister of the STJ
“The greatest constitutionalist alive in Brazil left us today. One of the greatest in the world. As a person, he surpassed the jurist. Northeast of Paraíba, he adopted Ceará but had lands in Rio Grande do Norte. He and my father (Múcio Ribeiro Dantas ), were born in the same year, they were friends and fellow Constitutional Law professors. He at UFC, dad at UFRN. Starting today, Paulo Bonavides begins to live in Heaven. His lessons don’t die! RIP “
Nefi Cordeiro, STJ minister
“The country loses its great mentor in constitutional interpretation and in the protection of individual guarantees. A lesson in criminal principles, Paulo Bonavides is a light that must continue to guide the options of a society that demands efficiency, but cannot abandon the guarantees of protection. the work remains and illuminates ”, he added.
Sebastião Reis Júnior, Minister of the STJ
“One of the greatest lawyers in this country. At a time like the one we are going through, his lessons will certainly be lost a lot. Generations and generations of lawyers, judges, prosecutors, prosecutors and teachers learned from Professor Paulo Bonavides the constitutional principles that we they guide until today. We will miss him very much. “
Herman Benjamin, STJ Minister
“Paulo Bonavides was – and will continue to be – a full-fledged jurist. Fullness that refers to the obvious, to the full domain of the Science of Law, and also to the inevitable, the integrity that he printed in the use of his intelligence and knowledge, always concerned about the dignity of the human person, solidarity as a reason of State and foundation of society, probity as the central column of the Republic. The greatest lesson left to young students is that the true jurist does not sell his pen , thought and soul to those who do not respect neither the Constitution nor their peers. “
Antonio Carlos Ferreira, Minister of the STJ
“Brazil will greatly miss the enormous talent of Paulo Bonavides. His lessons will always be remembered and his image will forever remain among those great men who helped build a better country.”
Luiz Alberto Gurgel de Faria, minister and professor at the STJ
“Paulo Bonavides: a Northeastern who conquered Brazil and the world through his works, teaching life and law lessons, especially the Constitutional one. The love for his roots is recognized, among so many contributions, in his” Open Constitution “, Al propose the recognition of the Northeast as an entity of the federation, with autonomous legislative and administrative institutions, aimed at solving problems peculiar to the region. It had a special connection with the TRF-5, my court of origin, being justly honored with the supreme honor: the Pontes de Miranda medal I miss you, professor!
Ives Gandra Martins Filho, Minister of TST
“One of the commandments of Brazilian law, Paulo Bonavides, departed for Eternity, but his writings had already been immortalized in life, as a literary and a jurist. The passage that saddens those who remain, however, has the power to illuminate the work that remained, awakening the desire to visit it again. Let us take this opportunity to discover in these consecrated sources a new elixir to address the problems that we now have to solve, as magistrates, lawyers, prosecutors, politicians and administrators. And so Professor Paulo Bonavides will continue to help and guide us, as he did so much in life. “
Otavio Luiz Rodrigues Jr, professor at USP and coordinator, with Minister Dias Toffoli, of the ‘Paulo Bonavides’ collection of Editora Forense
“We realized that a time is over when one of the thickest trees in the forest disappears. That feeling is the same as when Paulo Bonavides, one of the giants of Constitutional Law, Political Science and the Theory of the State, disappeared. His books have formed generations. They shaped national legal thinking, anticipated trends and brought the state of the art on these issues to Brazil in large centers. Like his student, the pain is even greater. “
Marcus Vinícius Furtado Coêlho, former president of the OAB
“In 2013, upon receiving Paulo Bonavides as president of the OAB, we launched a movement against the convocation of a constituent and for the defense of the validity of the 1988 Constitution. The best way to keep alive the ideas of this outstanding Brazilian jurist it is to remain in the trench of the predominance of constitutional values, especially the guarantees that aim to ensure the human being as the gravitational center of the State and society ”.
Ophir Cavalcante, former president of the OAB
“An irreparable loss. A simple, human, educated, studious man, in short, a human being who should serve as an example to all. His work crossed the borders of Brazil, becoming a benchmark in the study of Constitutional Law in the best Faculties of Law. Of the world. His contribution to legal science is invaluable. The man goes, the works and the example remain “.
Streck relieved, advocated
“Master of generations. Several constitutions passed through him. I helped organize a book and a congress in his honor. The title was taken from a famous phrase by Bonavides: Before the Codes; today, the Constitutions. He understood the normative power of the Constitutions as few.. “
César Asfor Rocha, lawyer and colleague of Bonavides at the Cearense Academy of Letters
“It is an immense loss for the legal world and for me, personally, that I had the honor of being his student in his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in law. He is the great exponent of modern constitutionalism, with international recognition. He was one of the pioneers in the making of legal principles extracted from the cold letter of the law, without ever missing the spirit of the constituents and the Constitution “.
Manoel Carlos de Almeida, lawyer
“The teacher went to find his son again. The loss for Brazilian constitutionalism is enormous, but his legacy is immortalized in his books.”
Arnaldo Godoy, professor at USP
“Innovative, different, daring, he understood, above all, the dynamics and importance of dogmatic fundamental rights.”
Eduardo Sanz, criminal lawyer
The death of one of our most prestigious constitutionalists is an irreparable loss for the Law and for all Brazilians. Much strength to friends and family and the regret of all Brazilian lawyers ”.
