The main runway of the Congonhas airport, in the South Zone of São Paulo, will once again receive landings and takeoffs from large planes this Sunday (6). This morning (5), President Jair Bolsonaro participated in the delivery of the road renovation works. In total, R $ 11.5 million were invested in the work.
According to Palácio do Planalto, the president returned to Brasilia after visiting the airport.
“We are delivering another important project, which brings more security for operations, for the crew and passengers, in what is the second busiest airport in the country,” said Infrastructure Minister Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, who inspected the place on the side of President Bolsonaro and the President of Infraero, Brigadier Hélio Paes de Barros.
According to the ministry, the works were completed in 32 days and should improve drainage capacity, increase the adherence of the aircraft’s tires to the pavement and reduce the possibility of aquaplaning (skidding due to water on the ground).
The track received a high-tech coating, called a Friction Porous Surface Layer (CPA), milled from the existing asphalt overlay, and a structural layer of asphalt concrete with grooved (grooves) in the headboard area.
The main runway at Congonhas Airport is 1,940 meters long, 45 meters wide and supports aircraft up to category 4C, which includes the main aircraft used by Brazilian airlines, such as Boeing 737-800, Airbus A320 and Embraer E195.
The first scheduled operation is the arrival of Latam flight 3009. Leaving Belo Horizonte tomorrow at 8:45, the aircraft should land in Congonhas at 10:05.
During the period in which the main runway was built, Congonhas continued to receive landings and takeoffs on the auxiliary runway. According to Infraero, the maintenance of the works between the months of August and September considered the low incidence of rains in the São Paulo capital for the period of the works.
