RIO – Two tourists from Pará were kidnapped and tortured by armed traffickers from Rocinha in the early hours of Saturday, after being mistaken for militiamen. According to the Military Police, they were rescued by agents of the local UPP this Saturday morning, after receiving the report of the victims.

Accompanied by four other friends from Belém, who were not taken by the criminals, they were accosted by traffickers while enjoying a pagoda in a community bar. After the crime, they were sent by the police to the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital, in Leblon, in the late hours of the morning, being released around 7 am. Both are doing well.

One of the victims, who preferred not to identify herself, said that she saw the event on social media and therefore thought the place was safe and decided to go, arriving around 1 am. About an hour later, five armed traffickers approached them, forcing them to go into a kind of captivity inside a house high up in the community.

– It was about two hours of torture. They punched us in the back, chest and face, while threatening us with death. They said they were waiting for the owner of the hill to arrive to decide what to do with us. But when the owner arrived, he understood that we were not militiamen and he let us go. He also said to ask for help at the UPP of Rocinha – he detailed.

After being released by the bandits, they went to the police, who took them to the hospital. Still according to the victim, the trauma caused the return to Belém, scheduled for Tuesday, to be anticipated for today.

– We continue to go to the airport that afternoon to find a ticket to get home early. There is no more weather to continue here – the tourist lamented, around 12 o’clock, while she waited at the 11th PD (Rocinha) to register the occurrence. Until 4 in the afternoon, they remained at the police station giving testimony to the police.

In a video released this Saturday on the Prime Minister’s Twitter, the victim thanked the agents for their support:

“We are from Belém do Pará and we came here to Rio. We went to a pagoda in Rocinha and ended up being confused with militiamen. They took us to Rocinha and there they tortured us. We appreciate the intervention of the Military Police, who managed to take us to the hospital,” he said, with his tortured friend, in front of Miguel Couto.

By note, the PM reports that, after the complaint, the police carried out a sweeping action in the community and rescued the four tourists who managed to escape. It also confirms that the six were referred to the eleventh DP for the occurrence record.

Memory

In October 2017, 67-year-old Spanish tourist María Esperanza Ruiz Jiménez died after being shot in Rocinha. At that time, the PM reported that the car he was in crossed a blockade carried out by the police and, therefore, the agents fired shots at the vehicle.

In testimony to the police at the time, the driver of the vehicle, an Italian who has lived in Brazil since 2013, denied having received any arrest warrant and said he did not notice police barriers or shots. The prime minister reported that he was only a tourist after approaching the car. According to witnesses, nine shots were heard.

María Esperanza received a blow to the neck and was rescued, but died before reaching the Miguel Couto Hospital. In the car were five people, three Spaniards, a Brazilian guide and an Italian driver. Only Maria was hit.
