The National Council of Education (CNE) approved this Tuesday (6) the validity of the remote education until December 2021, due to the suspension of face-to-face classes due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The guidelines apply to all networks in the country., from basic education to higher education, whether public, private or community.

The approved text also allows:

  • that states and municipalities choose merger of academic years 2020 and 2021 by adopting a continuous two-year curriculum in basic education
  • one “supplemental” school year for third year high school students

The text still has to be approved by the Ministry of Education (MEC), but it already points to the consensus of the councilors when approving the recommendations unanimously.

The document facilitates the approval of the school by allowing the “redefinition of evaluation criteria” for the “promotion” of the student, carried out by education departments and school institutions.

It also recommends “special attention” to passing students in the final years of elementary school (fifth through ninth grade). This stage of teaching has a high failure and dropout rate.

The text also highlights the possibility of a “continuous” curriculum between 2020 and 2021 to “avoid increasing the failure of the end of the 2020 school year.”

Unique cycle in São Paulo

In São Paulo, the Secretary of State for Education, Rossieli Soares, announced on Tuesday (6) that the state network must adopt a single cycle for the academic year 2020 and 2021. The secretary said that the proposal will apply to students approved this year. The idea is to unify in eight months to dilute education and have the possibility of those who have not learned to recover.
