According to the Archdiocese of Rio, Easter’s special hug is to transmit a “message of hope and encouragement during this delicate moment of the global pandemic.”

At the foot of the statue, the Consecration of Brazil was also celebrated, an event that had only happened once: at the inauguration of the monument, in 1931.

At a press conference last week, Archbishop Dom Orani Tempesta emphasized that the atmosphere of the celebration will be different, as crowds gathered to accompany the blessing in the 1930s.

When Dom Leme inaugurated the Christ, he said a prayer consecrating the city and the country to the heart of Jesus. We had other celebrations. But just as the Holy Father said a special prayer, we will consecrate people’s lives and their apprehensions to the Lord on Sunday night, “Bishop Orani said.
