“If the United States continues its unilateral actions, China will take the necessary measures to firmly protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies,” the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in a statement.

This Friday, Washington took a step closer to banning the two applications, owned by Chinese giants ByteDance and Tencent, justifying the decision with alleged risks to US national security.

According to the decree signed by the White House, WeChat will no longer be accessible in the United States as of this Sunday. TikTok will no longer be able to update its app, but the service will remain available to US users until November 12.

A term that could allow ByteDance to sell its TikTok activities in the United States to an American company, the only solution considered by Washington to not ban the application of videos in its territory.

According to the US government, these new measures were designed to protect national security, but they exacerbated the battle with Beijing over digital technology.

Strengthening relations with China has been one of the pillars of Donald Trump’s campaign, who will seek re-election on November 3.
