The general director of Carrefour Brasil, Noel Prioux, videotaped a statement issued today, around 9 pm, on open television. He regretted the death of João Alberto Silveira Freitas, attacked by two security guards in a supermarket unit in Porto Alegre (RS), last Thursday night (19).

“What happened at the Carrefour store was a tragedy of incalculable dimensions, the magnitude of which is beyond my understanding as a privileged white man. First of all, my feelings for João Alberto’s family. And my apologies to our customers. , society and our employees, ”said Noel.

“If a crisis like this is happening to us, it is because we have the responsibility to change that in society. The death of João Alberto cannot happen in vain,” he added.

The video was also attended by João Senise, the company’s vice president of Human Resources, who said that more than half of Carrefour Brazil’s employees are black or black, but evaluated that more diversity actions are needed.

“What happened in our store does not represent who we are or our values. 57% of our employees are black and black. And more than a third of the managers say they are black or brown. But it is not enough. We need more formal actions concrete and effective ways to further promote diversity, ”he said.

Carrefour Brasil had previously announced on social media that it would take appropriate measures to hold those involved in this “criminal act” responsible.
