The general director of the Carrefour Group in Brazil, Noel Prioux, spoke this Saturday (21. “What happened at the Carrefour store was a tragedy of incalculable dimensions, the extent of which is beyond my comprehension, as a privileged white man that I am. So, first of all, my feelings for João Alberto’s family and my apology to our clients, society and our employees ”.Prioux said.
Senise said that more than half of Carrefour’s employees in Brazil are black and white. He also assured that more than 30% of managers declared themselves black or brown. “What happened in our store does not represent who we are or our values. Fifty-seven percent of our employees are black and white, and more than a third of our managers call themselves black or brown. But we are aware that we need more concrete and effective actions to strengthen our culture of diversity “, said.
In the video, Prioux also affirmed that the death of João Alberto will stimulate the company’s commitment to combat structural racism in Brazil.
“I reinforce my commitment to all Brazilian families. If a crisis like this is happening to us, it is because we have a responsibility to change that in society. The death of João Alberto cannot be in vain. And that is why today we are committed to helping combat structural racism. CONTEXT
João Alberto Silveira Freitas, 40, known as Beto by his friends, was attacked in a unit of the Carrefour supermarket in Porto Alegre (RS), on Thursday night (November 19, 2020), the eve of Black Awareness Day . celebrated on November 20.
The two suspects, Giovane Gaspar da Silva, a 24-year-old military policeman, and security guard Magno Braz Borges, 30, were arrested on the spot.
The Military Brigade, as the Military Police of Rio Grande do Sul is called, reported that the beating began after a disagreement between the victim and an employee of the supermarket, which is located in the north of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. The victim allegedly threatened to beat the employee, who called security.
After the supermarket security arrived, Freitas was taken from the cashier area to the entrance of the store and, according to the Civil Police, the fight began after hitting the military policeman with 1 punch. Then the victim was beaten by the men.

A team from Samu (Mobile Emergency Service) tried to revive the man after he was hit, but Freitas was killed on the spot.
