Even on Sunday night (8), after the defeat suffered by Atlético-MG 4-0, the Flamengo management understood that Rogério Ceni was the ideal name to replace Domènec Torrent. They acted quickly, and he was already announced today (10) as the new red-black commander.
In the first survey of a person who works with Ceni, the answer that was given was that the coach would only speak after two conditions: 1) if the position in Gávea was vacant, that is, out of respect for Torrent, Ceni would not negotiate with him while still working; 2) that the flamenco hatters contact Fortaleza, communicate their interest and warn that they will pay the compensation of R $ 960 thousand.
Flamengo got the message and, although they were not 100% sure that Ceni would accept an offer (especially since they had not dealt with salary, contract conditions and bonuses), they decided to fire Torrent on Monday morning (9), even with the technician and his commission preparing to deliver the training.
Negotiating with Ceni and Fortaleza after leaving Dome, however, was not easy for one reason: logistics. The Ceará team played in Curitiba against Atlético on Saturday (7), stayed in Paraná on Sunday and traveled to Salvador on Monday, where on Wednesday they will face Bahia. Between Curitiba and the capital of Bahia, there was a stop in São Paulo. In other words: the contact between the clubs and the coach had to be interrupted several times.
In the morning, as the blog showed yesterday, the Fortaleza board trusted that Ceni would resist the flamenco harassment. One of the reasons was the bad experience the coach had in 2019, when he left Pici for Cruzeiro and was fired eight games and just over a month later.
But there was another issue that gave the fortress some peace of mind, something that was forbidden to speak out loud: the certainty that Ceni would be São Paulo coach in 2021 at the end of his contract.
Flamengo’s proposal, however, was irrefutable and not only financially. In Fortaleza the impression was that only Flamengo, with the best squad in Brazil, would remove the former goalkeeper from the club today. And that’s what happened.
