CBF warns the government that it does not have the power to authorize selection for TV Brasil

Following a contact from the federal government, CBF warned the federal government that it cannot authorize the transmission of Brazil x Peru to Open TV. That’s because the broadcasting rights belong to Mediapro, the agency that bought the Peruvian federation. There is no way for the confederation to make an institutional arrangement.

Mediapro requested $ 20 million for the qualifying game package that includes eight away national team commitments. Globo did not want to pay and gave up. Turner has reached an agreement to broadcast on the EI Plus pay channel with revenue sharing with Mediapro.

This Tuesday, the executive secretary of the government’s Communications Ministry, Fábio Wajngarten, reported on Twitter that he requested authorization from CBF to broadcast the game on TV Brasil.

CBF Secretary General Walter Feldman, however, explained to the government that the entity could not grant this authorization because it is not related to rights. According to the Conmebol rule, there is a rule that the rights belong to the local team, in this case the Peruvian federation, which negotiated the rights with Mediapro. In other words, neither an institutional negotiation between the federations would be possible now to launch the game.

Brazilian law provides for the mandatory broadcast of the selection game on Open TV. But it is not specified who would be responsible for enforcing the law in the event of deadlocks such as the match against Peru.
