The global president of the Carrefour Group, Alexandre Bompard, said that the death of João Alberto Silveira Freitas was a “horrible act” and that he repudiates intolerance. João Alberto, a black citizen, was beaten and killed by two white security guards in a Carrefour store in Porto Alegre (RS) last Thursday (19).
In a social network, last Friday (20) Bompard asked the supermarket chain in Brazil to “carry out a complete review of the training actions for employees and third parties, in terms of safety, respect for diversity and the values of respect and I repudiate intolerance ”.
He informed that this review will be accompanied by an action plan defined by external companies to guarantee independence at work.
Bompard also reported that he asked the group’s teams in Brazil to collaborate with the Justice and the authorities so that “the facts of this horrible event come to light.”
Brutal death of João Alberto, black beaten in RS, provokes protests in Brazil
When specifying that measures were taken in relation to the hired security company, the executive pointed out that “these measures are insufficient.” On Friday, Carrefour in Brazil had already reported that it would break the contract with the company responsible for the security guards who committed the attack.
“My values and those of Carrefour do not tolerate racism and violence,” said the global president of the supermarket chain.
In Brazil, Carrefour published a note this Saturday (see the full text below) saying that November 20 was the “saddest day in the history” of the company and announcing that all the sales results of the last 20 of the Carrefour Hipermercados stores, will be donated to entities linked to the fight for black consciousness.
See the full Carrefour note published this Saturday:
November 20, which must be marked by the awareness of the inclusion of black men and women in society, was the saddest in the history of Carrefour.
Words will not express our anguish over brutality.
We will give all our support to the family of João Alberto Silveira Freitas and, out of respect for him, our store in Passo D’Areia closed yesterday and will remain closed today.
In addition, all the results of the November 20 sales of the Carrefour Hipermercados stores will be donated to entities linked to the fight for black consciousness.
Today, we open later to reinforce anti-racist training with all our employees and third parties.
We will continue with our transparency, informing the next steps.
Nothing will bring João Alberto back to life, but we are sure that this moment of deep pain will turn into concrete actions that will prevent tragedies like this from happening again.
