An employee of Carrefour where João Alberto Freitas, 40, was beaten and killed by security guards last Thursday (19) told the police that he was staring at her and that “he seemed to be furious about something,” according to a statement released by Fantastic, from TV Globo.
New videos obtained by leaf with the Civil Police of Rio Grande do Sul show the moments before the crime. João Alberto arrives at the supermarket with his wife, Milena, shortly before 10 pm, according to camera hours. Ten minutes later, the couple go to the cashier to pay for their purchases, where he appears to be talking to his wife and the assistant.
Shortly after, the customer leaves the ATM and approaches another employee in black, who was next to one of the security guards arrested for his death, Magno Borges Braz. She dodges and leaves, but he follows her and gestures with his raised left hand. It is not possible to understand the meaning of the gesture from the image.
It was this employee who reported in testimony on Saturday (21) that João Alberto began to look at them while he was at the checkout. She said she did not understand what Beto said, because of the noise and the mask, and that he “did not seem to be joking when he gestured towards her and his colleague, but he seemed to be furious about something.”
The wife Milena, according to Fantástico, gave another version to the police about this moment. She said her husband “made a hand signal to a slim girl dressed in black, as a joke.”
In the next few minutes, João Alberto returns with the woman and waits for her to go shopping at the cash register. Then a third white employee arrives, Inspector Adriana Alves Dutra, who later intimidated the man who recorded the beatings, and speaks with security guard Magno and João Alberto.
A second guard, Giovane Gaspar, appears, puts his hand on the customer’s back and the three — the woman in white and the two security guards — follow him to the exit of the market. Another camera shows João Alberto walking down the conveyor belt, with the employees behind. When Milena appears seconds later with the cart, two more employees run past her.
Possibly, that was the moment when, in another image, João Alberto hits one of the guards when he reaches the door. He was then beaten for at least two minutes and suffocated for almost four minutes in front of 15 witnesses and he died on the spot.
