The businessman Manoel Mariano de Sousa Filho, 51, is a candidate for mayor of Barra do Corda, in Maranhão, for the PSC. The position has already been held three times by the candidate’s father, a common story in Brazil. But this time there is something quite different. Manoel is accused of killing his father, a crime that occurred in 2017, and is running for mayor against a brother, state deputy Rigo Teles (PV). The information is from Uol.
Known as Júnior do Nenzim, Manoel brings in his name a reference to his father, Manoel Mariano de Souza, Nenzim, who was murdered at age 78 on December 6, 2017 with a point-blank shot to the neck.
Former mayor Manoel was at home when his son went to pick him up to take him to speak with the family lawyer. On the way, the truck with the two stopped on a deserted street. Junior says his father asked him to stop because he needed to urinate. He was reportedly shot at that moment and he felt a hit in the car, but initially he thought his father was feeling ill.
He said he called the lawyer to tell him that his father was not feeling well and that it was only on the way home that he noticed “a little blood” coming out of his father’s ear, who was also vomiting. At the lawyer’s house, he took over the car. They also passed a gas station, where the family’s driver began driving the truck. Only then did they go to a UPA.
The former mayor was still transferred to a hospital in a nearby town, but died on the way.
Another version
The Public Ministry believes that the son’s version is false and that it is untenable for him to affirm that he did not realize that his father had been shot. The investigation indicated an interval of 40 minutes between the moment of the shooting and the arrival at the UPA. It also says the car underwent a thorough cleaning at a car wash. When the vehicle was impounded, the passenger seat had been removed “because it was soaked in blood,” the investigation says.
Investigations show that Junior stole cattle from his father’s farms due to debts acquired during a 2016 mayoral run; lost to Eric Costa (PCdoB).
On the morning of the crime, the father wanted to count the cattle with his son. He even hired another cowboy for the job. For the MP, the son decided to kill his father to avoid being unmasked.
An arrest warrant was issued for Junior on the day of Nenzim’s wake. Upon learning of this, Junior left there and did not follow his father’s funeral. Still, he was arrested days later. He remained in the Pedrinhas Penitentiary in São Luís until October 2019, when he received habeas corpus to respond in freedom. The jury court in the case has yet to set a date and, meanwhile, Júnio registered his candidacy for mayor in the Electoral Tribunal.
He claims to have no impediment to apply, as he has not yet been convicted. His candidacy continues to appear as “pending” in the Electoral Court, that is, it has not yet been accepted.
Junior did not comment on the case now. Upon leaving prison, he posted a note saying that he did not kill his father. He is running for mayor with his brother, deputy Rigo Teles (PV), with Gil Lopes (PCdoB), supported by the current mayor, and Adão Nunes (PSL).
