RIO – President Jair Bolsonaro was the protagonist of the first day of the electoral campaign for the city of Rio. The current mayor Marcelo Crivella (Republicans), candidate for reelection, resorted to the image of the president in a “virtual saint” and was criticized by his opponents Luiz Lima (PSL) and Eduardo Paes (DEM).

Bolsonaro had been offering veiled support to the mayor, but declared that he would not participate in the first round of the municipal elections. A video with Crivella’s campaign jingle, also released on Sunday, says the mayor is “alongside Bolsonaro.” Luiz Lima, who is part of the base of government in Congress and was launched by the PSL in hopes of attracting Bolsonaro’s support, covered Crivella by citing Republicans’ support for Geraldo Alckmin’s candidacy for the presidency in 2018. .

Paes, for his part, tried to get rid of the national polarization and said that he will not campaign “to suck Bolsonaro, Lula or Ciro,” citing former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and presidential candidate Ciro Gomes (PDT). Martha Rocha, a PDT candidate, also avoided turning to national leaders and introduced herself as a “delegate” to voters.

Campaign in slums

On the first official day of the campaign, Crivella did not attend an ecumenical service in the Madureira Park, in the North Zone of Rio, which had been announced by his team. Instead, he participated in meetings with Republican candidates for councilor in the Santo Cristo neighborhood, in downtown Rio, and in the Jacaré favela, in the North Zone. The meetings were not reported to the press.

In a brief speech in the first act, organized by Pablo Mello – a member of the WhatsApp group “Guardianes de Crivella”, the object of an investigation by the Public Ministry – the mayor said he had “a clear conscience and an intrepid heart. This week he was sentenced to eight years of ineligibility, by the Regional Electoral Tribunal (TRE), for abuse of political power. The decision is still subject to appeal.

Paes, who started the street campaign in Morro do Adeus, in Complexo do Alemão, posted a video early in the morning defending himself against accusations of corruption and saying that it was a “clean slate.” Like Crivella, Paes was declared ineligible by TRE-RJ, but received a court order in 2018 to suspend the sentence and the process has yet to resume.

During the German agenda, Paes avoided exploring Crivella’s legal situation and said that he hoped his appeal would be accepted and would contest the election, wanting to “defeat him at the polls.” The former mayor also sought to associate Crivella with outgoing Governor Wilson Witzel (PSC), his opponent in the 2018 elections, to attack the current administration and also wink at Bolsonaro.

– This former judge (Witzel) was chosen because he indicated that he had the support of Bolsonaro. What was the first thing you did next? He fought with Bolsonaro. I did not have the support of Bolsonaro, but the next day I would be there making myself available, if I had won – he said.

Lima, which began the campaign with a walk in Campo Grande, in the West Zone of Rio, was accompanied by supporters who wore Bolsonaro’s electoral campaign shirts in 2018 and Brazilian flags. Despite being prevented from using the president’s image due to her support for Crivella, Lima greeted the Bolsonarista electorate.

“While I was on the street in 2018, asking for votes for President, Crivella was asking for votes for Alckmin,” he said.

In addition to the walk in Copacabana, Martha Rocha visited an Integrated Center for Public Education (CIEP), known as “Brizolão”. Speaking during a meeting with candidates for councilor of the PDT and PSB, party of her deputy Anderson Quack, Martha criticized the management of Marcelo Crivella. A GLOBO, she responded to Paes and stated that she does not seek to nationalize her campaign.

– – First of all, from the outset, I say that I will not nationalize this debate. I am focused on Rio’s problems and on finding solutions to the city’s serious problems. I want to tell you that Eduardo Paes generates many of the problems that occur today, and I want to tell you that there is life beyond Eduardo Paes – declared Martha. *

Clarissa Garotinho (PROS) promoted a symbolic act in front of the Rio City Council, in Cidade Nova, and also criticized previous actions.

– All of Rio de Janeiro is abandoned. We do not need great works, but to put to work what is not working today – said the candidate.

Suêd Haidar (PMB) did a live to present the candidacy and Glória Heloíza (PSC) reserved Sunday to record electoral programs. Cyro García (PSTU) held a virtual meeting with his campaign committee.

* The initially published sentence was attributed to Martha, but the statement was made by federal deputy Alessandro Molon, PSB state president, who supports the delegate’s candidacy.
