The director of the Butantã Institute, Dimas CovasHe said on Thursday 17 that in addition to the definitive registration, on December 23 the emergency use of the Coronavac vaccine will also be requested at the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). As Anvisa established ten days for the evaluation of emergency use, it would be possible to obtain this authorization in early January.
Therefore, Butantã is considering starting vaccination against covid-19 earlier, in the January 15. The previously published date was January 25. Data on the efficacy of Coronavac, an immunizer developed by the Butantã Institute in partnership with the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac, has yet to be published.
“We declare that we will request registration, we will request registration in China and Brazil. We will also request emergency use in Brazil. If we do it next week, as scheduled, on the 23rd, this means that in the first week of January we can have a demonstration by Anvisa. That is, as of January we may have authorization to use the vaccine. As of the 15th, therefore, we will have, in this schedule, 9 million doses to be used in Brazilians ” said Dimas Covas.
“If it occurs within the manifest of the federal authorities, the schedule for the start of vaccination in January could happen from January 15, due to the availability of vaccines. They will be ready to be used ”, said the director of Butantã at a press conference. “The vaccine cannot be on the shelf.”
On Monday the 14th, when the São Paulo government announced postpone publication of the vaccine efficacy result Coronavac, argued that this postponement would be made to request the definitive registration of the vaccine, which would facilitate the approval of the immunizer. On Thursday, however, Butantã said it will also request emergency use, but kept the effectiveness disclosure next week.
In a note late in the afternoon on Thursday, after the press conference, Butantã reported “that he did not back down in relation to the registration application form in Anvisa.” According to the agency, on Monday it was reported that Butantã would request Anvisa on the 23rd for the definitive registration of the vaccine. “Four hours after this press conference, Anvisa went public and set a period of ten days to analyze the emergency requests. Based on this new decision by the federal health agency, the Butantã Institute announced on Thursday that it will once again commit to the Application for definitive and emergency registration. ”
Governor João Doria (PSDB) said that the previously announced date for the start of vaccination on January 25 remains the officially scheduled date for the start of immunization in São Paulo. “If we can start earlier, great, that’s what we want the most. We set this deadline so as not to run over the Anvisa rite, but there is a faster rite, and I would say here that this is estimated to happen since we are losing 700 lives more per day, the faster the better. We will be prepared to do the immunization in São Paulo and also looking forward to the country as a whole doing it. ”
The São Paulo government also said that it waits until this Friday 18, a formal request from the Ministry of Health for the purchase of the Butantã vaccine and the inclusion of the immunizing agent in the national vaccination plan, but affirmed that, even if the federal government establishes the start of vaccination in February, São Paulo maintains the forecast to start vaccinating in January.
The Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuellosaid Thursday that the federal government expects to receive 24.5 million doses of vaccines in January. Of these, 9 million are Coronavac. In a hearing in the Senate, the minister said that “he is going for a contract” with the laboratory linked to the São Paulo government to buy the immunizer. On Wednesday, Pazuello delivered a new estimate for the start of vaccination in the country and said that the forecast is to begin “mid-February.”
