A businessman was arrested on suspicion of having committed a crime of qualified damage and attempted murder against residents of the Tabubinha Community, in Morro Branco, city of Beberibe, on the East Coast. The arrest occurred during Operation Dunas, carried out by the Ceará State Civil Police (PCCE). Search and seizure warrants and arrest warrants were executed, in addition to the seizure of at least half a million in domestic and foreign currency.
More information will be presented at a press conference, at 3 pm, in the auditorium of the Superintendency of Civil Police, in the Center.
The Ombudsman’s Office of the State of Ceará (DPCE) accompanies the families residing in Tabubinha, which is a traditional Drinking-water community and has been suffering attacks during the night. According to DPCE, the arrested businessman was designated by the residents of the community.
The community is made up of more than 150 people who have lived from fishing and agriculture for more than 60 years. According to the Ombudsman’s Office, neighbors say the attacks occur constantly at night and are carried out by hooded men who use machines and brute force to tear down houses and drive away the population.
The last violent attack occurred in the early morning hours of November 30, when the neighbors were physically attacked. By early September, the houses had already been demolished in a similar attack.
The case is followed by the supervisor of the Center for Human Rights and Collective Actions (NDHAC), defender Mariana Lobo, together with the supervisor of the Housing and Housing Center (Nuham), defender Lino Fonteles, and the head of Beberibe, defender Betânia Alves. According to the Ombudsman’s Office, the reports collected so far indicate that there are at least five police inquiries into acts of violence so that residents leave their homes.
“We will do everything possible to find a solution that aims to guarantee the fundamental right to housing, provided for in the Constitution. Acts of violence are constant, ”says Mariana Lobo. According to her, in September, the demolition of the area only stopped because people were placed in front of a house where children were sleeping. “A tragedy can happen at any moment. We are following the issue with the municipal police authorities, in order to guarantee the protection and integrity of the families, the maintenance of possession and the repair of damages ”, he adds.
The Ombudsman’s Office contacted the Office of Social Technology of the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) to carry out a georeferenced survey of the plots, thus enabling the regularization of land ownership by families through a technical-scientific argument.
The information is from the Ministry of Security and Social Defense (SSPDS) and the State Public Defender is following up on the case.
