British actor Dave Prowse, who played Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy, died Saturday at the age of 85, his agent Thomas Bowington said Sunday.
“We announce, with great sadness, that our client Dave Prowse passed away yesterday (Saturday) at the age of 85,” the agent wrote on Facebook.
“May the force be with him, always,” the representative told the BBC, recalling the phrase used by the protagonists of the saga. “It is a really painful loss for us and for millions of fans around the world.”
Dave Prowse, a former bodybuilder turned actor, landed the role in the famous trilogy thanks to his looks and height of almost six feet. But the heavy accent from Bristol, in the west of England, was deemed inappropriate for the character, and the production cast actor James Earl Jones to voice the great villain.
Prowse represented England at the Commonwealth Games weightlifting in the early 1960s, before beginning his acting career.
With his impressive black armor, metallic breath and powers, Darth Vader is one of the most striking ‘villains’ in movie history. The phrase “I am your father”, simulating the character’s dark voice, is one of the most repeated by fans of the saga created by George Lucas.
“Vader is the most important villain in history,” Dave Prowse told AFP in 2013.
For many years, the actor traveled the world to attend fan conventions for the original trilogy, which hit theaters between the late 1970s and early 1980s.
