“Itamaraty, through the General Consulate in Paris, provides consular assistance to the family of the Brazilian citizen victim of the terrorist attack.”
Previously, the French policeman had claimed that, in the attack described by French President Emmanuel Macron as an “Islamic terrorist”, an elderly victim was “practically beheaded” and that a man and a woman had also died. Everyone was waiting for the first mass of the day.
The woman, who is now known to be the Brazilian, reportedly managed to escape to a nearby restaurant after being stabbed multiple times, but did not resist her injuries and died.
In an interview with the France Info television channel, Brahim Jelloule, the owner of the restaurant, said that he died at around 1:30 am after seeking help.
“He crossed the street, full of blood … He kept talking, saying that someone was still there (inside the church),” said Jelloule, owner of the L’Unik pizzeria, in front of the basilica.
The murdered man was 55 years old and his throat was cut. He would be in charge of maintaining the basilica and leaves behind a wife and two children.
French police sources named the suspect as Brahim Aioussaoi, a 21-year-old Tunisian who arrived by boat on the Italian island of Lampedusa in September. He was quarantined for coronavirus before being released and advised to leave Italy. Aioussaoui arrived in France earlier this month.
The police shot him and he is in serious condition.
The attack in Nice comes almost two weeks after the death of Professor Samuel Paty at a school on the outskirts of Paris.
According to French police, Paty was beheaded by 18-year-old Abullakh Azorov for showing his students cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, a holy figure in Islam, as part of a lesson on freedom of expression. Azorov was shot and killed by the police.
In July 2016, Nice was the scene of another larger-scale attack. A truck ran over several people who were watching the fireworks in celebration of July 14, Bastille Day, killing 86 people and injuring 500 others.
The attack ended after a shootout with police, which killed the driver, identified as 31-year-old Tunisian Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, who lived in France.
