Barack Obama, former president of the United States for two consecutive terms, said that “Brazil was a leader in the past, it would be a thought if it stopped being so.” Obama gave the statement to Grupo Globo journalists on Sunday (15), in the context of his participation in the program Conversa com Bial, which will be broadcast on “TV Globo” at dawn on Tuesday (17).

The information is from the “O Globo” website.

Obama launches this Tuesday the first volume of his memoirs, “A promised land”, a 751-page book that will be published in Brazil by the Companhia das Letras publishing house.

As part of the launch announcement, the former US president spoke last Sunday, from Washington, with the executive editor Flávia Barbosa, of “O Globo” and Pedro Bial.

In the interview, Obama will comment on the covid-19 pandemic, the victory of his former deputy, Joe Biden, in this year’s US elections, the state of democracy in the United States and the relationship with Brazil.

Asked by journalists about the statements of President Jair Bolsonaro who, in refuting Biden’s positions on the Amazon, said that “when there is no more saliva, there must be gunpowder”, Obama reinforced the role of Brazil in the environmental issue and highlighted: “Brazil was a leader in the past, it would be a shame if it stopped being so.”

He also said he hoped that, with a new administration in Washington, there would be “an opportunity to redefine that relationship.” “I know that Biden will emphasize that climate change is real, that the United States and Brazil have a leadership role to play.”

The Obama interview will also be on the website and in the print version of “O Globo” on Tuesday morning.
