According to data from the Ministry of Health published on Saturday, Brazil has 58,509 infected people. Compared to yesterday’s figures, there was an increase of 10.4%, with 5,514 patient records from Friday to today, one record so far. In the last government report, published yesterday, the total number of contaminated was 52,995, with 3,670 deaths.

This growth does not mean that there have been more deaths and infections in the last 24 hours, but that they have been notified to the Ministry of Health to be counted in the daily report of the portfolio.

At a press conference at the Planalto Palace on Thursday, Health Minister Nelson Teich said the ministry did not know whether the increase in the number of deaths “represents an effort to close diagnoses or a growing trend line” . Requested this Saturday, the ministry did not comment until the publication of this report.

For the president of the Infectious Diseases Society of Rio de Janeiro (Sierj), Tânia Vergara, registering the number of new cases registered in 24 hours is part of the logic of the disease, which spreads in geometric progression, that is, , one person transmits to two other people, who transmit two more, etc.

She claims that this also implies the highest number of deaths. – The more infected people, the more infected people. The more infected people, the more deaths, he explains.

According to her, the trend is that this growth will continue in the coming days and may worsen if measures of social distance are suspended. – Stay home – advises.

Infectious diseases specialist Rosana Richtmann adds that, in addition to the transmission characteristics of the disease, other factors may explain the growth in the number of cases registered in recent days, such as the entry of data that had not yet been calculated by the health departments or the ministry.

She says, however, that this index is difficult to interpret, since the actual number of infected people is much higher. – We always say that you can multiply this number by ten – he says, mentioning the underreporting of records.

When asked about death records, Rosana says that this was already expected for Brazil, since the country is very heterogeneous, with regions more equipped than others.

In mentioning the North region, where the new coronavirus caused the collapse of the health system, in addition to the cemeteries in Manaus, the infectologist says that “she has no words to describe the situation” experienced by the local population.

According to Rosana, no country was prepared for the pandemic, but Covid-19 “opened” what is no longer spent in Brazil in terms of health infrastructure.

He also remembers that social disparities also occur in other regions of the country, such as in the city of São Paulo, where it is easier for the wealthiest people to stay at home, while on the periphery the situation is different.

“We know that the rigor that we have more towards the central region of São Paulo, of closed trade, is not the same scenario of the periphery,” he comments.
