Brazil confirmed on Thursday (18) another 2,724 deaths from Covid-19 in 24 hours, the second highest number in the entire pandemic. The increase was only less than that registered last Tuesday (16), when 2,841 deaths entered the count.

With the update, the country reached 287,499 victims of the disease caused by the new coronavirus.

This is the third day in a row that deaths have exceeded 2,600. Only since Tuesday (16), there have been 8,213 new victims. The moving average of deaths reached the maximum number 23 in a row, standing at 2,086 in the last seven days.

Another 86,982 cases were also registered, for a total of 11,780,820.

Sixteen states and the Federal District have an ICU bed occupancy greater than 90%, which already represents a collapse on the part of the specialists heard by the CNN.

The situation is even more serious in three units of the federation: Mato Grosso, Rio Grande do Sul and Rondônia have all beds occupied and patients in critical condition have to wait to receive treatment.

The drastic situation of the health system demands tougher measures in the main capitals of the country. In São Paulo, the city has planned five holidays to try to reduce the movement of people. The city previously confirmed the first death caused by a lack of available beds.

In Rio de Janeiro, Mayor Eduardo Paes (DEM) said he did not rule out the possibility of “closing everything” or promoting sanitary barriers. Some of the measures should be announced this Friday (19).

Across the country, at least 18 states have adopted a curfew.

According to a survey by the CNN, the advance of vaccination in priority groups caused the fall of new cases of Covid-19 registered per month among health professionals. The average number of new diagnoses per month fell more than 36% compared to the last two months of 2020.

However, among the general population, this effect cannot yet be seen. Only in these three months of 2021 have already been registered more than half of all confirmed cases in 2020. At the beginning of this Thursday, 10.9 million people had received the first dose of the immunizer, which is equivalent to little more than 5% of Brazilians. .
