Today, Brazil registers 1,092 daily deaths from covid-19, on average during the last seven days. It has been 26 consecutive days with an average of more than a thousand, since January 21.
The current figures are close to the peak of the first wave of the pandemic, when Brazil had 31 consecutive days with the daily average above a thousand, between July 3 and August 2.
Yesterday (14), the country reached the worst daily average of deaths since the start of the pandemic. There were 1,105 deaths per day, averaging seven days. Previously, the highest number had been reached on July 25: 1,097. Thus, this Monday’s number is the third largest in the pandemic and the second largest in 2021.
So far, 239,895 people have died from the coronavirus in Brazil. The number of people who contracted the disease is 9,865,911. The number of vaccinated is 5,285,981.
12 emerging states
The scenario in Brazil is considered stable, with an increase of 2% in the daily average of deaths. The only region with an acceleration in deaths is the Northeast, up 31%.
The states with an accelerated scenario are: Acre, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima, in the North; Bahia, Ceará, Maranhão, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, in the Northeast; Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, in the Midwest; Minas Gerais, in the southeast.
The data comes from state health departments. They were raised by the press vehicle consortium of which UOL is part.
The average of the last seven days is considered by experts as the best way to observe the covid-19 scenario.
On weekends, for example, the numbers tend to drop due to the lesser availability of health teams to update the data. The average of the last seven days is one way to mitigate these distortions.
To define whether the scenario is one of acceleration, stability or decline, the change in 14 days is calculated.
The total deaths recorded today – without averaging – was 601. This does not indicate when the deaths actually occurred, but rather the date they began to appear in official balances. In the last 24 hours, there were 32,216 positive diagnoses for the new coronavirus.
Health data
This Monday (15), the Ministry of Health announced that Brazil registered 528 new deaths caused by covid-19 in the last 24 hours. Since the start of the pandemic, the disease has caused 239,773 deaths across the country, according to the Ministry’s accounts.
From yesterday to today, 32,197 new cases of covid-19 have been registered, reaching a total of 9,866,710 infected in the country since the start of the pandemic.
According to the federal government, 8,805,239 people recovered from the disease, with another 821,698 being followed.
Vehicles gather for information
In response to the decision of the government of Jair Bolsonaro to restrict access to data on the covid-19 pandemic, media Twitter, El Estado de S. Paulo, Folha de S.Paulo, O Globo, G1 and Extra formed a consortium to work collaboratively to seek the necessary information directly from the state health departments of the 27 units of the Federation.
The federal government, through the Ministry of Health, should be the natural source of these figures, but the attitudes of the authorities and the president himself during the pandemic cast doubt on the availability of the data and its veracity.
Experts indicate the calculation of the moving average.
To measure the situation of deaths from covid-19, experts indicate using the moving average of deaths, which calculates the average of records observed in the last seven days. The operation is the most suitable to observe the trend of the statistics, since it balances the abrupt variations of the numbers throughout the week.
The media consortium adopted this period to check for fluctuations in the moving average. It is possible to speak of a decrease in figures when the decrease is greater than 15% if it is verified in the last 14 days, in this case, the period of the last two weeks. If the numbers rise more than 15%, the epidemic accelerates. Intermediate values indicate stability.
