The Ministry of Health announced, on Thursday (10/8), that it has already guaranteed 142 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine for Brazil.

The account includes immunizations negotiated with the AstraZeneca laboratory, responsible for the development of the Oxford vaccine, and those obtained by joining the international consortium Covax Facility, led by the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to the folder, this Thursday (10/8) the payment of the first installment of the R $ 2.5 billion that will allow Brazil to access the vaccines of the global initiative was made.

The international consortium will authorize the country to obtain the immunizations that are being developed by nine laboratories: Inovio, Moderna, Curevac, ThemisMerk, Oxford / AstraZeneca, Novavax, Queensland University, Clover and the University of Hong Kong.

Joining the Covax Facility ensures that Brazil vaccinates 10% of the population, with approximately 42 million doses. The other 100 million units will come from the agreement with the AstraZeneca laboratory, part of which will be manufactured in the country by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FioCruz).

The executive secretary of the Ministry of Health, Elcio Franco, anticipates that the first stage of vaccination will be completed in the first quarter of the year. The queue must be organized according to the rules of the National Immunization Program (PNI), however, adaptations can be made depending on the effectiveness of the vaccines.

Moving average

The announcement was made on the day the country recorded a daily moving average of 611 deaths from Covid-19. The number represents a small increase compared to the fourth (7/10), which reached 609. However, in relation to the immediately previous 14 days, it fell 9.8%, which indicates stability.

Due to the incubation time of the new coronavirus, the recommendation of the experts to compare the daily moving average with that of two weeks ago was adopted. Variations in the number of deaths or cases of up to 15% more or less characterize the invariance.

In absolute numbers, the country registered 729 deaths from the disease and 27,750 new infections from coronavirus in the last 24 hours, according to the latest report released by the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass). In total, Brazil has already lost 148,957 lives due to Covid-19 and has calculated 5,028,444 cases of infection.
