A survey by the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) indicated that 375 doctors died from victims of covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic in the country. The organization yesterday launched a virtual memorial in tribute to these professionals who died after the infection.
The data on the deaths of doctors were obtained from information provided by Regional Councils of Medicine, medical unions, specialty societies, state and municipal health departments and cases reported by the press. In the country there are 523,528 active medical records, according to the entity. According to the CFM, São Paulo was the state that lost the most agents to covid-19, 58 professionals. They are followed by Pará (51) and Río (50).
“Being on the front line from the beginning of an unknown disease and with a highly complex contagion. Our decision was to pay tribute to those we lost and to those who are on the front line, to those who are managing to face this situation ”. , says Helena Carneiro Leão, vice-rector of CFM. According to her, the work to lift deaths began in May and the data was reported until last week.
The platform also has a front-line doctor photo gallery and a space for people to message professionals. The portal also has an area for doctors with reference documents, podcasts and reports on covid-19.
In the balance until October 17 of the Ministry of Health, 69 deaths of doctors were registered. The basis of the Ministry is the cases reported in Sivep-Influenza, which registers severe cases with hospitalization and deaths from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
“To guarantee the protection of these professionals – who work on the front line in the fight against the disease – more than 300 million personal protective equipment (PPE) have already been distributed. They are masks, aprons, glasses and face shields, caps, sneakers, gloves and alcohol, ”the folder reported.
Helena says there has been a decrease in serious cases and deaths over the months, following the national trend, and this is also linked to the efforts of doctors in the fight against the disease.
“The importance of SUS and the management of primary care must be highlighted. Family and community doctors were present to prevent the population from going to the hospital in a more serious condition ”.
One of the first doctors to die of covid-19 in Minas Gerais was a general practitioner in the city of Jequitinhonha, in the Jequitinhonha Valley, 418 kilometers from Belo Horizonte. Ramón Pinto Lobo, 69, had a clinic in the city, was a doctor at one of the municipality’s health posts and was on call once a week at the local hospital. The clinician died in Nova Lima, in the metropolitan region of the capital of Minas Gerais, on May 6, after being subjected to two hospital transfers. The doctor entered the unit where he worked in early April.
“He came to work very weak, disoriented, with diarrhea and vomiting. I helped him load it. He was hospitalized here for about a week. Then he went to Teófilo Otoni (a distant city about 450 km from the capital) ”, recalls one of the employees. from the hospital, Jackson Ribeiro Melo, 32 years old.
The doctor was not diagnosed with covid-19 at the Jequitinhonha hospital. “It seems that the contagion was in Teófilo Otoni,” says the official. Ramón had comorbidities.
A bulletin released yesterday by the city of Belo Horizonte indicates that 57 doctors from the city’s health system have contracted covid-19 since the start of the pandemic. The report does not indicate the number of deaths among professionals. The category most affected in the municipality, however, is that of nursing technicians, with 216 cases.
Underregistration
The São Paulo Physicians Union (Simesp) began collecting information on physician deaths in April and reported 273 cases.
“We did an artisan survey, because we saw a lack of data on deceased health professionals, but it is not reported. There is a lack of data in this regard. They gave us news in every city in the country. It was like counting grain by grain, doctor in dead doctor, to pay homage to him ”, informs Víctor Dourado, president of Simesp.
Both surveys do not have information on whether the professionals were working on the front line and if all those who died were still active.
“Most are working, because doctors end up retiring late. But we are trying to find alliances for a greater systematization of these data to show the impact on doctors with scientific data ”, says Dourado. (He collaborated with Ludimila Honorato)
