Brazil today surpassed the mark of 6 million infected by the new coronavirus. In the last 24 hours, the country registered 34,516 new cases of the disease, reaching a total of 6,017,605 positive diagnoses since the beginning of the pandemic. The data comes from the press media consortium from which Twitter It is part of.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, Brazil has become the third country to exceed 6 million cases of covid-19. Before, the United States (September 1) and India (September 27) were the only ones to register this mark.
521 new deaths from the disease were confirmed from yesterday to today throughout the country. The total number of deaths caused by covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic increased to 168,662. There were an average of 544 deaths in the last seven days.
Health data
According to a survey published on Friday (20) by the Ministry of Health, the country registered 38,397 new cases of covid-19 in the last 24 hours, reaching a total of 6,020,164 positive diagnoses for the disease since the start of the pandemic.
The Ministry reported that, from yesterday to today, 552 new deaths from covid-19 were registered throughout the country. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the total number of deaths caused by the disease has reached 168,613.
In total, 5,422,102 people recovered from the disease, and another 429,449 were followed.
Four regions on the rise
The press media consortium points out that, with an average of 544 deaths a day in the last week, Brazil had a variation of 50% when comparing the rate of two weeks ago, which indicates an acceleration in the registration of deaths.
Twelve states also showed a trend to accelerate, while another six declined. Eight states and the Federal District remained stable.
Of the regions, only the Northeast showed stability (-7%). The others had an increase in the average death: Midwest (23%), North (17%), Southeast (120%) and South (49%)
It is important to note, however, that the increases in some states may be explained by the data blackout the country experienced in early November. On the 6th, the death registration platform of the Ministry of Health for covid-19 began to show problems. Several states reported difficulties entering data into the e-SUS system and published incomplete or even out-of-date information for several days.
The state of São Paulo was one of the most affected, with no deaths for five consecutive days. In the coming days, this problem in the system is expected to impact the percentage of upward, stable or downward trends in the affected states and also in the national trend.
To measure the situation of deaths from covid-19, experts indicate using the moving average of deaths, which calculates the average of records observed in the last seven days. The operation is the most suitable to observe the trend of the statistics, since it balances the abrupt variations of the numbers throughout the week.
The media consortium adopted this period to check for fluctuations in the moving average. It is possible to speak of a decrease in figures when the decrease is greater than 15% if it is verified in the last 14 days, in this case, the period of the last two weeks. If the numbers rise more than 15%, the epidemic accelerates. Intermediate values indicate stability.

Vehicles gather to obtain information
In response to the decision of the government of Jair Bolsonaro to restrict access to data on the covid-19 pandemic, media Twitter, El Estado de S. Paulo, Folha de S.Paulo, O Globo, G1 and Extra formed a consortium to work collaboratively to seek the necessary information directly from the state health departments of the 27 units of the Federation.
The federal government, through the Ministry of Health, should be the natural source of these figures, but the attitudes of the authorities and the president himself during the pandemic cast doubt on the availability of the data and its veracity.
