Today Brazil passed the mark of 165 thousand deaths due to covid-19. Between yesterday and today, 818 new deaths related to the disease have been reported, totaling 165,673 in the country since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the state health secretariats, nine states and the Federal District showed a growing trend in the average number of deaths.

In the last 24 hours, 36,402 new positive tests were registered in the country, totaling 5,848,101 infected. The data come from the consortium of press media from which Twitter It is part of.

In addition, six states showed a downward trend, while 11 maintained stability.

Government data

According to data published today by the Ministry of Health, Brazil registered 921 new deaths from covid-19 in the last 24 hours. In total, there are 165,658 deaths from the disease in the country.

The city government reports that since the start of the pandemic, 5,848,959 people have tested positive for the new coronavirus; of these, 38,307 have been notified between yesterday and today.

The country maintains stability

There were 484 deaths per day, on average, in the last week across the country, representing a stability of 15% compared to 14 days ago. It is the second day in a row that Brazil has a moving average above 400 after ten days below this number.

It is worth mentioning that the increase in accelerations in some states can be explained by the recent data blackout that the country faced. As some states recorded zero deaths on those days, returning in numbers with dam data may affect the variance. This may be the case in Amapá, Roraima and São Paulo.

Among the regions, Southeast (19%) and South (52%) showed acceleration. The Northeast (-16%) was the only region in decline, while the Midwest (15%) and the North (6%) were stable.

To measure the situation of deaths from covid-19, experts indicate using the moving average of deaths, which calculates the average of records observed in the last seven days. The operation is the most suitable to observe the trend of the statistics, since it balances the abrupt variations of the numbers throughout the week.

The media consortium adopted this period to verify fluctuations in the moving average. We can speak of a drop in figures when the drop is greater than 15% if it is verified in the last 14 days, in this case, the period of the last two weeks. If the numbers rise more than 15%, the epidemic accelerates. Intermediate values indicate stability.

Vehicles gather for information

In response to the decision of the government of Jair Bolsonaro to restrict access to data on the covid-19 pandemic, media Twitter, El Estado de S. Paulo, Folha de S.Paulo, O Globo, G1 and Extra formed a consortium to work collaboratively to seek the necessary information directly from the state health departments of the 27 units of the Federation.

The federal government, through the Ministry of Health, should be the natural source of these figures, but the attitudes of the authorities and the president himself during the pandemic cast doubt on the availability of the data and its veracity.
