BRASILIA (Reuters) – Following negotiations with the Global Vaccination Alliance (Gavi), Brazil confirmed its “intention to join” the Covax Facility initiative, a global program that aims to boost the development of vaccines against covid-19, reported the federal government tonight.
“The Ministry of Health has acted on several fronts to quickly and safely reach an effective solution for curing Covid-19,” says the note from the Special Secretariat for Social Communication (Secom).
“Buying a safe and effective vaccine is a priority for the federal government,” the statement added.
This global vaccination plan aims to ensure the purchase and distribution of doses of the immunizer against covid-19 fairly and worldwide.
The day before, Brazil had asked the alliance for an extension of the deadline to formalize its participation in the Covax Facility initiative, claiming that the country is studying “participation” in Covax “carefully” and “continues in negotiations” with Gavi.
Originally, the deadline to enroll in the program would be until midnight this Friday.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a webinar Thursday that more than 170 countries have already joined Covax.
