SAO PAULO, DEC 24 (ANSA) – Following the decision of more than 40 countries, the Brazilian government decided last Wednesday (24) to temporarily ban flights that originate or pass through the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, as a preventive measure after the discovery of a new variant of the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus on British soil.
The decision is included in a decree published in an extra edition of the Official Gazette of the Union and will enter into force as of December 25, the date on which Christmas is celebrated.
The new rule also restricts the entry to Brazil of foreigners of any nationality, by road, other land and river routes.
Despite the restriction, the ordinance signed by the ministers Braga Netto (Civil House), André Mendonça (Justice) and Eduardo Pazuello (Health) determines that, in case of exception, it is necessary to present a certification from the Federal Police.
“Exceptionally, the foreigner who is in a land border country and needs to cross it to board a flight back to his country of residence may enter the Federative Republic of Brazil with authorization from the Federal Police,” the text says.
The measure comes days after several countries around the world have banned travelers from the UK, blocking flights from that country. Last weekend, the British health authorities revealed the discovery of a new strain of coronavirus, with a faster transmission than the others.
As a result, Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered a shutdown in London and south-east England. (ANSA)
