At first glance, Mercedes appears to be the unbeatable force again this weekend of the new Tuscan GP, the ninth stage of the 2020 Formula 1 season. Valtteri Bottas repeated Friday’s performance and also led the third free practice, which was held this Saturday morning (12) in Mugello. However, Max Verstappen, with Red Bull very well on medium and soft tires, proved that he poses a real threat in the fight for pole position soon.
The Dutchman finished the last free session in second place, just 0s017 behind Bottas’ lap at 1min16s530. Lewis Hamilton was back behind his teammate and was beaten 0s083 to take third place.
Lance Stroll also stands out, fourth with Racing Point, while Pierre Gasly, in a stage lit with AlphaTauri, completed the list of the top five at Mugello.
Owner of the house and the weekend party for the 1,000th GP in the history of Formula 1, Ferrari had a very different morning in the pits. Charles Leclerc did well again and was seventh fastest, while Sebastian Vettel finished only 18th, with 19 drivers marking the time: George Russell, with Williams brake problems, barely rode.

With a lot of heat this Saturday in Mugello, 27ºC at room temperature and 40ºC on the track, the riders accelerated again for the first activity of the day on the stage of the new GP of Tuscany. At first, the work concentrated only on the installation loops.
The first to break the silence on the track was Valtteri Bottas, who clocked 1min17s437 on soft tires. Only after 17 minutes into the session, veteran Kimi Räikkönen left the pits to open his series of laps, pulling the line forever on the Italian circuit.

<p>Also on soft tires, Lewis Hamilton finally took the lead after a rough Friday. The six-time champion reached 0s022 faster than Bottas when he clocked 1min17s415. Charles Leclerc, with Ferrari, appeared in third position and with 0s918 time slower than the leader, but had medium tires in his best step.</p>
<p>The order of the timesheet changed after Lance Stroll turned 1min17s580, also on medium tires, and climbed to third place, while Alexander Albon was fifth in Red Bull’s number 23 car. Räikkönen was sixth on the list, but had his best time on soft compounds.</p>
<p>Bottas responded to Hamilton on a new lap with the soft to mark 1min17s239 and resumed the lead in practice. Lewis dropped to third position after Max Verstappen managed to do a big lap on medium tires to be just 0s059 behind the Finnish Mercedes driver.</p>

<p>So the Dutch was even better. With the fastest set in the first sector, the owner of Red Bull’s # 33 car drove 1min17s116 to take the lead in practice, leaving the two Mercedes cars and everyone else behind.</p>
<p>The top 10, already in the final half of the session, were made up of Verstappen, Bottas, Hamilton, Stroll, Leclerc, Albon, Pierre Gasly, Räikkönen, Sergio Pérez and Esteban Ocon.</p>
<p>George Russell had no recorded times with Williams. The British prodigy reported brake problems on the FW43 after returning to the team’s garage, now led by engineer Simon Roberts on the track.</p>
<p>About 20 minutes from the end of training, the teams began the final simulations in qualifying pace. On soft tires, Bottas overtook Verstappen and returned to the lead with 1min16s530. But the difference of 0 586 shows how good the time recorded by the Red Bull driver had been.</p>
<p>Sebastian Vettel also did his simulation on a fast lap and climbed to provisional sixth place, but had a slower time of 1s656 compared to Bottas. Leclerc then passed and improved his mark, leaving the four-time champion behind by roughly 0s7.</p>
<p>Hamilton tried but couldn’t get past Bottas on his fastest lap. The 35-year-old Briton clocked 1min16s613, 0s083 slower than his teammate.</p>
<p>Who stood out again this Saturday was Pierre Gasly. On an illuminated stage with AlphaTauri, last week’s Italian GP winner jumped to fourth position in the table by scoring 1min17s226 to advance to fourth position. The Frenchman, however, fell to fifth place after Stroll passed third with a 0s582 slower time compared to Bottas. The Canadian was better than Pérez, who finished in sixth place.</p>
<p>Only in the final minutes did Verstappen come out of the pits on soft tires for his qualifying pace simulation. The 22-year-old made another great lap and, even after going through the grass on the straight, he turned only 0s017 slower than Bottas. Living proof that Max will soon be fighting for pole against Mercedes.</p>
