Botafogo and Santos tie; Paulistas lose their chance to touch the top – 09/20/2020

With a great defensive performance, Botafogo managed to maintain 0-0 against Santos tonight (20) at Nilton Santos, in Rio de Janeiro. The result was not good for the ambitions of either team in the Championship.

Santos managed to maintain the unbeaten streak and now has six games without losing. However, Cuca’s team missed a good chance to reach the G4, staying in seventh place. The added point for Botafogo was good to get him out of the runner-up, but it was not enough to finish the round outside the relegation zone.

Botafogo’s next appointment is on Wednesday (23), when they will face Vasco in the Copa do Brasil. The next day, Santos will be in Ecuador to face Delfín for the Libertadores.

Arthur Gomes: missed the goal

Chosen by Cuca to take Soteldo’s place, Arthur Gomes was the player who gave the Botafogo defense the most trouble. With just seven minutes of play on a counterattack, he already forced Gatito to make a good save. After that, he still risked from a distance, but was again stopped by the Paraguayan, and sent a set kick, which went off.

Renteria: too discreet

The Colombian was little participant in Botafogo. In one of his few appearances in the match, he pushed Marinho in the first half. The play almost resulted in a free kick for Santos with Carlos Sánchez.

Saved but didn’t even need it

In one of the few times that Arthur managed to pass as Kitten, Victor Luís saved in an impressive way. The forward had received a touch of letter from Marinho and managed to cover the goalkeeper, but the defender avoided Santos’ goal by taking the ball off the line. Despite the exciting move, none of this paid off because the assistant scored Arthur Gomes’ own irregular position.

They almost kicked him out, but he didn’t need to.

At 38 minutes, Caio Alexandre gave Diego Pituca a hard time and José Mendonça da Silva Junior sent off the wheel. Then he went to see the bid in the video and concluded that the bid was not for that, drawing the red card and leaving Caio only yellow. Due to the check, the game was paralyzed for about four minutes.

Game timeline

In the first half, Botafogo started better and almost managed to surprise goalkeeper João Paulo. Santos’ attacking duo gave work to Botafogo’s defense. On one of Santos’ best occasions, Carlos Sánchez launched a foul that forced Gatito to make a good save.

After the break, the rhythm of the game remained similar, this time with the attack by Santos reinforced by the presence of Kaio Jorge, who returned to the team after recovering from Covid-19. At 29 he received the ball crossed by Sánchez and almost opened the scoring with his head. At 44 minutes, Santos made a bombardment, but Fogão’s defense again managed to dodge the goal.
