President Jair Bolsonaro (non-party) said today that the Health Ministry has suspended the purchase of syringes “until prices return to normal.”

According to the representative, the states and municipalities have stocks of the material for the start of vaccination against covid-19.

Last week, the ministry failed in its first attempt to buy syringes and needles for immunization. Of the 331 million units that the portfolio intends to buy, it was only able to offer 7.9 million units on the electronic trading floor. The number corresponds to approximately 2.4% of the total units that the portfolio wanted to acquire.

“As there was interest from the Ministry of Health in acquiring syringes for its regulatory stock, prices shot up and the Ministry of Health suspended purchases until prices returned to normal,” the president wrote on a social network.

“The states and municipalities have a stock of syringes for the start of vaccinations, since the amount of vaccines at the beginning is not large,” he added.

The purchase of syringes and needles is generally done by the states and municipalities. However, during the pandemic, the ministry decided to centralize these supplies.

After the first purchase attempt failed, the federal government restricted the export of syringes and needles.

– Brazil consumes 300 million syringes a year. We are also one of the largest manufacturers of this material. – I like it…
