Machado took over Embratur in May of last year. Before that, he worked in the transition of the government and, with Bolsonaro already in the Presidency, he was national secretary of Ecotourism and Environmental Citizenship of the Ministry of the Environment (MMA).

With Machado in charge, the federal government issued a provisional measure, approved by the National Congress and sanctioned by Bolsonaro, which transformed the agency into an agency, with autonomous social service status.

French designer Benoit Sjöholm accused Embratur of violating his copyrights, as the campaign used a typeface created by the artist that cannot be used commercially without authorization. Embratur admitted the mistake at the time.

The National Forum of Secretaries and Administrators of Tourism of the State (Fornatur) pointed out two problems: the use of “Brazil” with the letter Z, which ignores the country’s effort to improve internal spelling; and a possible sexual connotation of the expression “love us”, in English, instead of “love it”.

Against social distancing

In a speech on March 3, Gilson Machado called on mayors and governors not to harden the measures taken to maintain social distance. Gilson stated that the tourism sector could not bear “a second collective closure.”

“I wanted to take advantage of this moment to make an appeal to the governors, the mayors, in short, anyone who has the decision to close a confinement. Our tourist ‘case’, our tourist ‘trade’ cannot take another second collective closure ”, he said.

Machado said, without citing the source, that Brazil was the least unoccupied in the tourism sector among all tourist countries and gave the city of Porto de Galinhas, in Pernambuco, as an example.

According to him, the city of Pernambuco had 25% unemployment while there were “countries where unemployment was 60%”.

“Do not close, please, because there will be a massive strike if you do this. We managed to keep our jobs, which is our human capital, the greatest asset that a tourism company can have,” he declared.
