President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) affirmed that 60% of Amapá’s electricity needs will be covered before midnight on Friday (6). The announcement was made on video on a social network.
According to him, a team performs maintenance on a state transformer, which will allow the power supply to be restored. The state has suffered a blackout since Tuesday (3).
“Right now, our team is filtering the polluted air that cools the third transformer. Approximately 46 thousand liters, which will be completed today,” Bolsonaro said.
“[Com] As the oil is in good condition after the test, the transformer will start up, and it will start to work gradually. Therefore, about 60% of the state’s needs should be met before midnight today. [sexta-feira]”, said.
The blackout hits the capital, Macapá, and 13 of the 16 municipalities in the state.
During the day, Minister Bento Albuquerque (Mines and Energy) had said that it would take 10 days for the electricity distribution service to be fully restored.
During this Friday, the scenario was of water shortage, due to the lack of energy for the pumps in the system, queues in supermarkets and ATMs and loss of refrigerated food. Elective surgeries were suspended in all public hospitals.
According to Bolsonaro, the water has returned and the hospitals are energized. “The water supply has already been normalized and all the hospitals are already energized,” the president said in the video.
“We hope that, in the shortest time possible, all this energy issue will be resolved in our state of Amapá,” he said.
The City of Macapá declared a state of public calamity for 30 days, extended the working hours of the service stations to 24 hours and is using tanker trucks to supply the homes of the residents of the capital’s urbanizations.
The blackout reaches a region where 782,000 people live, about 90% of the state’s population. Only Oiapoque, in the extreme north, and Laranjal do Jari, in the extreme south, have electricity.
Bolsonaro said in the video that he ordered Minister Albuquerque to go to Macapá. In twelve hours, the minister was already in the state.
According to the president, of the three transformers of the state power company, one has been under maintenance since December 2019, another was destroyed after it caught fire and the third needed basic maintenance to get back into operation.
“From the first moment, the Brazilian Army and Navy were activated and, with their own generators, they restored power at strategic points,” he said.
“To fill the energy gap, Eletronorte will use thermoelectric generators. Shortly after midnight, our teams met to take other measures.”
